Typography PROFITT Curriculum Graphic Design Module __ Graphic Design Fundamentals

Typography is The Style, arrangement, or appearance of typeset matter (merriam-webster.com)

Typefaces Serif (ABCDEFG) vs. San-Serif (ABCDEFG)

Serif Serif fonts have little stokes on the ends of lines ( ABCDEFG ) It is generally agreed that serif fonts are easier to read in print

San-serif San-serif fonts do not have added stokes (ABCDEFG) It is generally agreed that serif fonts are easier to read on a screen Note: Both serif and san-serif typefaces are regularly used in print and online

Typography Your goal should be to convey information in the clearest way possible Do not get carried away using too many different fonts or selecting fonts which are not appropriate for your piece. For example, would you use Rosewood Std for a resume?

Note Typefaces are developed over much time, taking into consideration even the smallest details. It is generally considered a bad idea to manipulate the font in any way. Adding a stroke, skewing, or adjusting the vertical and horizontal scale often leads to unprofessional results. It is best to avoid all of these in the beginning.

Note Typography is an entire subset within graphic design focusing on typeface, line length, leading, etc. which will need further exploration after this course if you are interested in learning more.
