Daily Warm Up Enter the classroom quietly. Place your poetry materials on your desk. Place your back pack underneath your desk. Count the total number of poems you have with you in class today. Remain quiet. Review poetry project expectations and timeline.

Project Expectations

So what do I have to do again? You will be writing and reading lots of different types of poems. Your overall grade will depend on the number of poems you write, the illustrations, and on their quality. See the rubric to determine the number of poems you must write to earn points. Total poems to be written=22

Do our poems have to be typed? Final copies of poems should be typed and/or handwritten in your neatest writing. If you hand-write your poems, ink is a requirement.

Page Setup Include the name of the type of poem at the top of each page. One poem per page. Short poems such as Haiku and 5Ws may have two poems per page. Do not use/write on the back of the paper. See examples in the classroom

Illustrations Each poem must include a color illustration. Illustrations may be hand drawn or printed from a computer. Illustrations help the reader to picture the poem. Therefore, the pictures must relate to the poem.

Your cover sheet must include: You will create your own poetry book cover. You may hand draw this or create it using the computer. Your cover sheet must include: A title for your poetry collection Your first and last name ELA 7-___ (your period) Ms. Hines and Ms. Dalton 2012-2013 There must be an illustration or clip art added to the cover.

Table of Contents You must include a table of contents. Here’s a secret…use the one that I’ve included on the blog. Be sure to change it up and make it yours.  See the examples in class.

Critiques Page When you finish your poetry book and it is bound together, you will be asked to share it with four, important adults. Each will write a few comments about your poems and then sign the critiques page. Based on their feedback, you may need to make some last minute changes to your book. 

Be as detailed as possible. Reflection Page After your poetry book has been published and critiqued by four adults, you will write/type a one page self reflection. Things to consider: What did you like and dislike about this project? What are your strengths and weaknesses relating to this project? Which poems did you enjoy the most? Which one did you have a hard time writing? What did you learn about yourself? Why did you select the four adults that you chose to critique your project? Why are they important to you? Why did you select the two poems by other people? How well do you feel you managed your time? Was this your favorite project for the year? Be as detailed as possible.

Poetry Café (5/20-5/22) You will share one piece of your poetry with the class. This will allow you to meet the listening and speaking Common Core standards. You may invite a parent or guardian to come hear you present.  Everyone must present one original poem
