CONFIDENTIAL1 Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Temperature, changes, & negative numbers Let’s warm up : Complete the conversion tables: Hours478 Minutes 1) Calculate how much time has elapsed between: 2) 5:05 A.M. and 10:10 A.M.? 3) 2:20 P.M. and 5:40 P.M.? 4) 9:40 P.M. and 2:25 A.M.?

CONFIDENTIAL2 Let’s review the previous topic Calendar and Years Calendar displays the layout of the dates of a month and their corresponding day of the week of a particular year. Ordinal Number: A number used to tell order or position. They are used to say a date in a calendar. EXAMPLE: 1st, 7th, and 19th, or first, seventh, and nineteenth are ordinal numbers. June 26 can also be called the 26th of June, or the twenty-sixth. The layout of the calendar helps to know dates and their corresponding day in a particular month.

CONFIDENTIAL3 Review A day has 24 hours. There are 7 days in a week. DAYS Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday A year has 12 months. MONTHNO. OF DAYS January31 February28 March31 April30 May31 June30 July31 August31 September30 October31 November30 December31

CONFIDENTIAL4 Review A year is 365 days. But in the Leap year the number of days become 366 as the month February has 29 days. The Leap year occur once every four years. The years 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012,………… are Leap years. Counting with Years 1 decade10 years 1 century100 years 1 century10 decade 1 millennium1,000 years 1 millennium10 century

CONFIDENTIAL5 Suppose today is May 8. How many days is it until Mother’s Day? You can use a calendar to find the elapsed time. May 2000 SMTWTFS Mother’ s day  Count on from May 8 to May 14. It is six days from May 8 to May 14. Review

CONFIDENTIAL6 Review You can use a calendar to find the elapsed time. May 2000 SMTWTFS Suppose today is May 15 How many days is it until June 17? Count on from May 15 to May 31.i.e., 17 days in May. June 2000 SMTWTFS Step1:

CONFIDENTIAL7 Review June 2000 SMTWTFS i.e. 17 days in May + 16 days in June = 33 days Add the number of days in May with number of days before June 17. Step2: Therefore, It is 33 days from May 15 to June 17.

CONFIDENTIAL8 Review You can use a calendar to find the Date. May 2000 SMTWTFS June 2000 SMTWTFS Suppose today is May 23. What is the date after 21 days?  Use May 23 as the first day and count on 21 days. The 21 days after May 23 is June 13.

CONFIDENTIAL9 Let’s start the topic Temperature, changes, & negative numbers Temperature: It is a measurement that tells how hot or cold something is. When the temperature rises, I wear lighter clothing. There are 2 scales for measuring temperature: 1) Fahrenheit Scale 2) Celsius Scale The metric system uses the Celsius scale to measure temperature. However, temperatures are still measured on the Fahrenheit scale in the U.S.

CONFIDENTIAL10 The Fahrenheit Scale and the Celsius Scale measure the same thing (temperature!), just using different numbers.  If you freeze water, it measures 0° in Celsius, but 32° in Fahrenheit.  If you boil water, it measures 100° in Celsius, but 212° in Fahrenheit. The difference between freezing and boiling is 100° in Celsius, but 180° in Fahrenheit. Therefore each degree on the Fahrenheit scale is equal to 100 or 5 degrees on the Celsius scale

CONFIDENTIAL12 The temperatures below 0°F or 0°C are negative temperatures. You read 20 degrees Fahrenheit below zero as - 20°F. Temperatures can be below 0°F or 0°C. What is the temperature change from 15°F to -50°F? Step 1: Find the change in temperature from 15°F to 0°F. The change is 15°F.

CONFIDENTIAL13 Step 2: Find the change in temperature from 0°F to -50°F. The change is 50°F. Step 3: Add the 2 changes. 15°F + 50°F = 65°F. The temperature change is 65°F.

CONFIDENTIAL14 Conversion Method To convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit, first multiply by 180 or 9, then add Celsius to Fahrenheit Celsius to Fahrenheit = (°C × 9) + 32 = °F 5 Fahrenheit to Celsius To convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius, first subtract 32, then multiply by 100 or Fahrenheit to Celsius =(°F - 32) x 5 = °C 9

CONFIDENTIAL15 Conversion Method Convert 98.6° Fahrenheit to Celsius. First: 98.6° - 32 = 66.6 Then: 66.6× 5 = 333 = 37° C 9 9 Therefore, 98.6° F = 37° C Fahrenheit to Celsius =(°F - 32) x 5 = °C 9

CONFIDENTIAL16 Conversion Method Convert 26° Celsius to Fahrenheit. First: 26° × 9 = 234 = Then: = 78.8° F Therefore, 26° C = 78.8° F Celsius to Fahrenheit = (°C × 9) + 32 = °F 5

CONFIDENTIAL18 Assessment Find the temperature change from: 1) 23°F to -25°F 3) 64°C to -12°C 2) 108°F to -2°F 4) 59°C to -42°C

CONFIDENTIAL19 Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. 5) 24° C 6) 37° C 7) 69° C

CONFIDENTIAL20 Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. 8) 240° F 9) 89° F 10) 169° F

CONFIDENTIAL21 Very Good! Let's Review Temperature: It is a measurement that tells how hot or cold something is.

CONFIDENTIAL22 Review The Fahrenheit Scale and the Celsius Scale measure the same thing (temperature!), just using different numbers.  If you freeze water, it measures 0° in Celsius, but 32° in Fahrenheit.  If you boil water, it measures 100° in Celsius, but 212° in Fahrenheit. Therefore each degree on the Fahrenheit scale is equal to 100 or 5 degrees on the Celsius scale

CONFIDENTIAL23 Review Celsius ThermometerFahrenheit Thermometer Water Freezes Normal Body temperature Water Boils C F 37 0 C F 00C00C 32 0 F

CONFIDENTIAL24 Review The temperatures below 0°F or 0°C are negative temperatures. You read 20 degrees Fahrenheit below zero as - 20°F. Temperatures can be below 0°F or 0°C. What is the temperature change from 15°F to -50°F? Step 1: Find the change in temperature from 15°F to 0°F. The change is 15°F. Step 2: Find the change in temperature from 0°F to -50°F. The change is 50°F. Step 3: Add the 2 changes. 15°F + 50°F = 65°F. The temperature change is 65°F.

CONFIDENTIAL25 Review Conversion Method Convert 98.6° Fahrenheit to Celsius. First: 98.6° - 32 = 66.6 Then: 66.6× 5 = 333 = 37° C 9 9 Therefore, 98.6° F = 37° C Fahrenheit to Celsius =(°F - 32) x 5 = °C 9

CONFIDENTIAL26 Review Conversion Method Convert 26° Celsius to Fahrenheit. First: 26° × 9 = 234 = Then: = 78.8° F Therefore, 26° C = 78.8° F Celsius to Fahrenheit = (°C × 9) + 32 = °F 5

CONFIDENTIAL27 You have done a nice job. See you in the next session.
