Never have I ever... downloaded a book from Bookshare used a DAISY player heard of ASCII text used text-to-speech software taught a student to use a BookPort Plus created digital text taught a student to create digital text used a braille display used an iPad, Kindle... to access books used OCR

Literacy today is an all-encompassing term that has been applied across a variety of educational, vocational, societal and cultural domains. The printed word enables us to share knowledge. Regardless, it involves access to, understanding of and the ability to apply information. Literacy Today

One of the biggest barriers for students who have visual impairments is access to print.

Digital text is the representation of information in digital format. It can be accessed through many devices via a variety of programs. Text provided in digital format bridges the gap by allowing instant access. What & Why?

Login to Bookshare and select “Reading Tools” under “Getting Started” in the primary navigation bar. Select “Download Victor Reader Soft.” Save the installer file to your computer (Note where it saves to). Find the downloaded installer file. Open by double-clicking it, and run. Complete Setup Wizard by following prompts, reading and accepting the license agreement, and installing the application onto your computer (a shortcut will be placed onto your computer desktop). VRS Cont'd

Select “Reading Tools” under “Getting Started” in the primary navigation bar, select “Download Acapela TTS Voices,” and save the installer file to your computer. Find the downloaded installer file, open by double-clicking it, and run. Complete the Setup Wizard by following prompts, reading and accepting license agreement, and installing the application onto computer. VRS Voices

Two Acapela voices will be automatically installed into Victor Reader Soft. To select one of these voices: open Victor Reader Soft, select “Settings →Audio→TTS Settings.” Select either the Heather22k or Ryan22k voice. Choose your voice

READ:OutLoud is a reading tool provided by Bookshare™ trusted partner Don Johnston. It is designed for people with learning disabilities. This software application is available for free to Bookshare Members and this guide will help you install it onto your computer. READ:OutLoud (ROL)

Select “Reading Tools” under “Getting Started” in the primary navigation bar. Select “Download READ:OutLoud.” Save the installer file to your computer (download location will vary based upon computer and download settings). Find the downloaded installer file, open by double-clicking it, and run. ROL

Complete the READ:OutLoud Bookshare Setup Wizard by following prompts, reading and accepting the license agreement, and selecting the Standard setup (a shortcut will be placed onto your computer desktop). ROL

Select “Reading Tools” under “Getting Started” in the primary navigation bar, select “Download Acapela TTS Voices,” and save the installer file to your computer. Find the downloaded installer file, open by double-clicking it, and run. Complete the Setup Wizard by following prompts, reading and accepting license agreement, and installing the application onto computer. ROL Voices

Two Acapela voices will be automatically installed into READ:OutLoud. To select one of these voices: Open READ:OutLoud Select “Speech→Voice Settings.” Choose either the Heather22k or Ryan22k voice. Select your ROL voice
