MCHR’s Student Body Reflects its East Harlem Neighborhood The majority of students (79%) qualify for Free and Reduced School Lunch. The student body is 54% African- American and 37% Latino. 44% of the students are non-Catholic. Most students come from the immediate neighborhood, although a few families travel from the South Bronx and the West Side of Manhattan. MCHR is one of more than 215 Catholic elementary schools serving NYC children in all five boroughs.
107 Mount Carmel-Holy Rosary students attend the school using CSF scholarships – that’s close to 50% of the student body. A large number of the remaining students receive some type of scholarship, either through the Inner-City Scholarship Fund or through individual donors to the school. An Extended School Day – school ends at 4pm Mon-Thurs. Accelerated Reader Program – Students move up in reading levels by reading books and then taking quizzes. Over one 60-day period, MCHR students took 6,486 quizzes and had an average score of 91.8%. School Library – Through a $150,000 grant from Library Connections (funded by Peter Flanigan’s Patrons Program), MCHR employs a full-time library teacher and has equipped its library with more than 6,500 books. Technology Integration – MCHR has an up-to-date computer lab, and each classroom has 1-3 computers. Technology is incorporated into everyday coursework. MCHR Innovations Lead to High Test Scores
Every student takes part in violin or voice lessons twice a week. Older students interested in pursuing violin training at MCHR have performed at the Russian Tea Room, the Rainbow Room, and a few have been admitted to a special Juilliard program. Ballroom dancing is offered for 4 th, 5 th and 8 th graders, who go on to compete in a city-wide contest. Creative Classrooms provides the school with a professional art instructor who gives weekly lessons. MCHR’s Thriving Arts Program
Jaime Martinez (left) is a MCHR 8 th grader using a CSF scholarship. He is a ballroom dancer and violin player and plans to become a lawyer. He told us, “My parents and I wanted to have more opportunities. This would not have been possible without my CSF scholarship.”
