Sibelius Workshop April 5, 2011

Overview: Sibelius “thought” process Sibelius shortcuts Sibelius handbook and projects (Sibelius beginners should work on Projects 1 and 2) Sibelius scanning/working on our opportunity grant (non-beginners, we will explore how to scan and input music from other sources)

Thought Process Sibelius - proactive instead of reactive (in Finale you put in tuplets after you input the notes, in Sibelius you do it before…in Sibelius you can input transpositions before you write, etc.) Sibelius is written by musicians for musicians and should be a great resource for all of us (once we move past our ‘hangups’ from past software)

Sibelius Share and Worksheets Sibeliusblog - to share the tricks we discover, helpful hints, and questions (see wiki - shortcuts) Worksheets (pre-created and create your own) are a fatastic teaching tool (see wiki - tools)

Version 6 Improvements

REALLY important shortcuts Note input: “N” - type n to turn the note input pointer on or off Add interval above or below (1-9 or Shift 1-9) Create bar at end (CTRL + B) Delete a Bar (CTRL click 1st bar, shift click last bar, hit delete) Cres/decres (H/shift H) Triplet (Ctrl 3) Slur - (select note and then hit “S”, press space bar to extend)

More Shortcuts/Improvements

Handbook Projects Beginners- follow Sibelius projects starting with #1 the Sibelius Handbook (found under “Shortcuts” on the wiki) Advanced Beginners/Intermediates - go to project #2 and use the 2.2 “scanning” and 3.6 “arranging” lessons. We will use these for our opportunity grant.

HOW TO Op. Grant? 1.Open Sibelius 2.Go to the “scanner” which will open photoscore lite 3.Open photoscore lite and select “Open PDF” (you will need to scan in music using a xerox machine or other scanner. There is a glich with photoscore reading the music because of a program called ghostwriter which we need to have installed and Albert is working on it.) We will use one of the pdfs I have posted on the wiki “Here Comes the Sun”

More Op. Grant? 5. Open the “Here Comes the Sun” pdf 6.Ask Photoscore to read each page of “Here Comes the Sun”. 7.By viewing the original, try to correct any mistakes in the music that Photoscore did not read correctly 8.Import the photoscore pdf into sibelius by going to file and then “send to” Sibelius 9.Choose how you would like to view it (portrait) and select “choose your own instruments”

More Op. Grant: In order to do our new arrangement, we need to do a few measures at a time to make sure it transfers the way we want it to. 10.Select the first measure of the violin 1 part and then shift click to select measure 8 of the cello part. 11.Go to File then NEW to create a new score that you will be arranging your new version in. (I am arranging this for string ensemble) 12.Select the instruments you would like in your new arrangement (select key, time, etc.)

Op. Grant Continued 13. Add measures (Create - Bars- other and then add a number you want to contend with ex. 16) 14. Select the first measure of the violin 1 part (click) and then the 8th measure of the bass part (shift click). Go to “Notes” and select “arrange.” 15. Sibelius will give you several arranging options - select “string family - double violin 1 in octaves”

Arrange Styles

Op. Grant Continued 16. The parts will transfer to the newly arranged score*(see next slide). You can then go back and forth between the trio part and the ensemble part arranging 8-10 measures at a time. 17. When the arrangement is complete, print the parts and share them with your students!
