Etiquette in England and America Ogre Grammar School Form 8 b Linda Bērce

Preamble Although people ever more relate, still it is important to know, note and respect manners of other nations Everybody knows both England and America are English - speaking Language is a part of culture, but I wanted to know are traditions in these countries are alike too I am interested about main traditions and every day habits in England and America So I found differences between these countries

Hypotheses Although people speak same language, they live in different countries and etiquette of traditions is various That affects environment, development level etc.

Task Explore traditions and ways in England and America Compare traditions in these countries Ascertain students’ desires and information level about England and America

Methods Reed cognition material Interviews with exchange students Polling students in our school

Language uzvārdssurnamefamily name, last name saldumi, konfektes sweetscandy rēķinsbillcheck dzīvoklisflatapartmenttaksometrstaxicabLatvianBritish EnglishAmerican English

Communication, talk in England Starting to talk you shouldn’t speak about problem at one. You should talk about economical things, which the English give big heeding Englishman’s silence doesn’t mean his assent to somebody said, but rather skill patient listening to his companion Humour has meaningful place in the life of British people Greeting ‘‘how do you do?’’ isn’t a question, but a phrase of affability, which must be answered with the same question

Behaviour The English are always punctual Simple handshake is the standard greeting (for both men and women) for business occasions and for visiting a home Their etiquette has concept ‘‘Privacy’’ which means ‘‘don’t impede my piece, if I don’t want that!’’ Eye contact is seldom kept during British conversations To signal that something is to be kept confidential or secret Englishman tap his nose It’s considered inappropriate to touch others in public

Communication in America Americans meeting very fast, they very quickly ’’pluck by the beard’’ in talk but they are fairly not interested in soul trials of others Americans are usually opinionated and direct in talk They like humour, that’s way real Americans laughs at jokes. Joke is precondition, to prepare auditory for reading or talk

Behaviour in America Etiquette of Americans is simple and democratic and they prize honesty and publicity They don’t talk about politics and religion by the table Americans are economical in time, that’s why they rate accuracy very high

Polling results Although most of our students have never been in Britain or America they think that they know something about behaviour in these countries Almost half of them is sure that they would behave politely in nearness of Englishman or American

Conclusions Although England and America have some cumulative traditions (for example cookout), many things – some traditions, behaviour and others are dissimilar There are quite a lot of differences in language In the teeth of people who think that England and America are similar, there are many differences
