Sherlock Holmes Short Stories Arthur Conan Doyle Josef Šíp 4.A

Arthur Conan Doyle ( ) - the whole name: Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle - he was born in Edinburgh in Scotland - British doctor and author of novels, tales, dramas and detective stories - his most famous character is Sherlock Holmes (he murdered Sherlock Holmes, but he brought him back to the life) - he fought in The Boer War - pieces: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Lost World, The Great Boer War

- this book has six short detective stories: The Man with the Twisted Lip The Engineer’s Thumb The Patient The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax The Three Garridebs The Wisteria House I liked the first (The Man with the Twisted Lip) and the fifth (The Three Garridebs).

The Three Garridebs - the whole name of the story is The Adventure of the Three Garridebs - it was released in 1924 in cycle The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes - it is set in June the narrator is Dr.Watson, Holmes’s friend - it is similar to another Doyle’s story - The Adventure of the Red-Headed League - this story was filmed

The main character is Nathan Garrideb who asked Sherlock Holmes to help him because John Garrideb, an American lawyer, visited him and talked with him about a property of A.H.Garrideb. This man let his property to people who had the same surname as him. But John Garrideb was not a lawyer, he did not want the property and his real name was Killer Evans because he had killed several people. When he returned from the prison he started looking for a machinery for printing forged notes which was hidden in a house, where Nathan Garrideb lived. So he wrote an advertisement to a Birmingham’s local newspaper as Howard Garrideb in order to bring Nathan Garrideb to Birmingham.

When Nathan left his house, John came there and he wanted to find the machinery. But Sherlock Holmes did not believe him and he was waiting for him, when John arrived. So John was arrested and the police found the machinery which had been hidden for several years. However, Nathan Garrideb was taken to a special hospital.

My opinions + thrilling, interesting and fast plot + S.Holmes see all details, he is very hard-working + all cases are solved - stories are short, similar and it is clear that S.Holmes will solve them - I think that the main idea in The Three Garridebs is unreal, because there are a lot of same surnames in the world I like detective stories so I like this book but the stories were too short.

Language eagerness – nedočkavost, horlivost anxiety – úzkost, strach consciousness – vědomí forgetfulness – zapomnětlivost forger – padělatel quarrel – hádka, hádat se The story was not difficult to read, but not easy, either, because I do not read English books. But I understood almost all words.
