Henry’s Book Response on “Who Were The Beatles?” By: Henry Wilms

The Beatles. The Beatles were musicians from Liverpool, England. Who became huge pop stars in America in the 1960’s. They were more popular then Elvis at the time and their music is still popular today!

John Lennon John was born in 1940 during World War II. John ended up living with his Aunt Mimi instead of his mom and dad. His Aunt taught him to love books and music. Johns mother bought him a guitar and taught him how to play it. John was very said when his mother died when he was 17. Also, he loved Elvis Presley.

John Lennon

Paul McCartney Paul was born in 1942 and he was a pretty good kid growing up. He liked to draw and write and he also liked Elvis Presley (like John) and Little Richard. Paul’s father was also a musician. He got a guitar when he was a kid and played it non stop even in the bathtub. Paul’s mother died of breast cancer when he was only 14!

Paul McCartney

Ringo Starr Richard Starkey was born in He changed his name to Ringo Starr when he was a musician. Ringo was a lonely kid and he was sick a lot during the years of middle school. He was in the hospital for over 3 years during that time. He learned to play the drums at the hospital. He did that to make other kids in the hospital feel better. When Ringo turned 18 his mom bought him a real set of drums and he started a small band at his pipe fitting job.

Ringo Starr

George Harrison George was born in 1943 and he was the youngest member of the Beatles. He was a quiet boy and learned to love music when he was 14. He begged his mother for a guitar and she bought him one which he taught himself to play. He formed a band with one of his older brothers. He met Paul on a bus and they became friends because they both loved music. George was the “Quiet Beatle.”

George Harrison

About the band The early band had 5 people and they called themselves the “Quarry Men.” In 1960 the band was renamed the Beatles. There were some other band members named Pete and Stu who did not stay with the band for too long. The Beatles went to Germany for four months where they played and started to become popular. In 1963 the band was made up of John, Paul, George and Ringo and they had a manager named Brian.

Beatlemania 1964

The Beatles Come to America In 1964 the Beatles came to America. This was the first time there had ever been rock stars from England in America. The band played on a TV show called the Ed Sullivan Show and made history. 73 million people watched them! Then they played many sold out concerts in the USA. They also made their first movie called A Hard Day’s Night.

The Fab Four

The Beginning of the End At first the Beatles loved being famous but then they got tired of being chased and traveling so much. Some of them had families and children and they wanted to spend more time at home. After making more than 20 albums and earning a lot of money they decided to split up the band. In the 1970’s the Beatles were still famous and still musicians but they did not play together.

The Beginning of the End (continued) When the Beatles stopped playing music together one of the saddest things happened. On December 8, 1980 John Lennon was shot and killed by a mentally ill man. John was 40 years old.

The Beatles remain the most famous musical group in the world. Their music will live on forever!
