September 8, 20152| Leading the Nation in Transportation Excellence | P H I L L I P S T O N Route 2 Over Route 2A P URPOSE  Remove and replace the existing structurally deficient bridge superstructure carrying Route 2 over 2A. Replacement required because of superstructure deterioration and damage by truck collisions. To avoid future collisions, vertical clearance increased to 16'-6". S COPE OF W ORK  Replace existing superstructure with new steel stringers and cast-in- place concrete deck.  New superstructure be built on temporary shoring adjacent to the bridge.  During an eight-day one week shut down, Route 2 traffic was detoured via the Exit 18 eastbound off- and on-ramps so that the existing superstructure could be removed, the new superstructure rolled into place, and the Route 2 approaches raised.

September 8, 20153| Leading the Nation in Transportation Excellence | P H I L L I P S T O N Route 2 Over Route 2A C OST  $3.3 million (includes design and construction costs). S AVINGS  Estimated savings of $2.5 million in costs to road users. F IRSTS  Fastest bridge replacement in the Commonwealth’s history.  MassDOT’s first use of self-propelled modular transporters. Time Savings: 14 months and $’s

September 8, | Leading the Nation in Transportation Excellence | P H I L L I P S T O N Route 2 Over Route 2A P H I L L I P S T O N Route 2 Over Route 2A L ESSONS L EARNED  Advertise in Summer for majority of design during Winter. This will optimize construction season and move completion out of the Fall.  Closely monitor/enforce Quality Control. Accelerated schedule can lead to loss of quality.  Accelerated construction techniques do not translate to standard bridge details based on a different sequencing of construction.  Clearly define Quality Assurance criteria.  Increased safety, schedule flexibility and shifts that will not effect traffic, work done off major route.  Incentive and disincentive clauses are effective and expedites the project.

September 8, | Leading the Nation in Transportation Excellence | SPMT L ESSONS L EARNED  Specify SPMT best suited for the project.  Maneuverability is nice but has trade offs. Certain sites, straight moves, over even terrain, may not require more expensive SPMTs. Our SPMT wheels had capability to turn 60 degrees, OK for a straight move like Phillipston. 90 degree turning SPMTs are available but would add cost.  Assurance that each pair of SPMTs move unilaterally is important. Helpful to monitor distance between pairs of SPMTs using some sort of rigid bracing. It was represented that this would not be necessary as there is one “brain” to move two SPMTs. Not entirely true. The brain moves the SPMTs together, but doesn’t monitor the exact distance between units – this was monitored manually during the move.  Having plenty of vertical stroke on the SPMTs is important. This was not an issue in Phillipston, but is worth mentioning on other projects. You really have to be careful that you have enough stroke to clear all temporary structures upon lifting, have enough stroke to handle the terrain, and have enough to clear the new beams seats/bearings.

September 8, | Leading the Nation in Transportation Excellence | SPMT L ESSONS L EARNED CON ’ T  The Site Safety Briefing before the Bridge Move should be required by specification.  The SPMTs in Phillipston did not have the capability to lower the entire trailer uniformly. Our units could only lower front end, then back end. This became an issue during the “landing” of the bridge. Until the right operator could take care of this manually, it was a struggle to land the bridge on the bearings without walking to one side or the other. Having SPMTs that lower uniformly would have made quicker.  Any opportunity to prefabricate the bridge off-site, is recommended. This allows more time to bring in the SPMTs earlier for setup, outside of any traffic restrictions. Philllipston site didn’t allow this without moving bridge several thousand feet, if there is room on site, outside traffic, is preferable.  Have provisions for shimming bearings after the bridge move is important, which we had.  Specify or consider provisions to stabilize temporary earth ramps for the SPMTs. Wet weather required the ramps to be plated.
