HELPING OUR ONLINE COMMUNITY THRIVE & LEARN PRESENTED BY MEGAN LOWE REFERENCE LIBRARIAN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Overview of Online Resources for Online & Distance Ed Students

Session Overview Types of Resources A Closer Look: E-books A Closer Look: Databases + Journals Other Resources  ULM-Related  Non-ULM Q & A Time FYI

Types of Resources There are two main types of resources:  Electronic books  Periodical databases (which include electronic journals) All electronic books are available remotely – that is, they are available off-campus Not all databases (and consequently electronic journals) are available remotely – but don’t worry, on our website we’ve indicated which databases aren’t available off-campus We do not maintain lists of all available ejournals

A Closer Look: Ebooks The ULM Library provides access to over 30,000+ electronic books (ebooks) This collection of ebooks is called NetLibrary Whenever you search the ULM Library Catalog, the NetLibrary collection is automatically searched… …but NetLibrary can also be searched independently of the ULM Library Catalog The ebooks are all full-text; are searchable; can be printed (though not in their entirety); and are downloadable.

A Closer Look: Ebooks Now here’s the trick: when you’re on campus, you do not need a login to access and view ebooks in NetLibrary… …however, if you intend to save titles or download them, you’ll need an account, even if you’re on campus… …and if you intend to access books – as well as everything else NetLibrary offers – from off-campus, you’ll HAVE TO HAVE a NetLibrary account NetLibrary accounts MUST be created ON CAMPUS

Step #1 of NetLibrary Account Creation

Step #2 of NetLibrary Account Creation

Step #3 of NetLibrary Account Creation This can be anything you want – it has nothing to do with Moodle or or FlightPath – it’s whatever you want it to be! …AND THAT’S IT! It’s really easy. But remember: you MUST do this WHILE YOU ARE ON CAMPUS!

NetLibrary: FYI If you are not local or on the main campus and cannot get to campus to create an account, please call or the Reference Department – we can help you set up your account If you have a distance ed student who cannot easily get to campus – whether the student is in Ruston or Anchorage, Alaska – please encourage them to contact the Reference Department so we can get an account set up for the student PLEASE DO NOT PRINT OUT ENTIRE BOOKS. To do so is COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. Please make sure your students know this, too!

A Closer Look: Databases + Journals ULM Library provides access to some 75+ electronic databases, each of those providing access to thousands of electronic journals, many of those electronic journals providing full- text access going back to at least the 1980s, and in some cases the 1960s, and in some cases, even farther back Most of these databases + ejournals are available remotely, but some of them are not – we have indicated which are not available in our listings

A Closer Look: Databases + Journals We list the databases two ways:  By Name – if know you’re looking for JSTOR, you can go straight to it on the name listing  By Subject – if you want to know what databases we have available for chemistry, or if you want to point your students towards databases which address assigned topics, this list is best; it is based on the major subject areas and disciplines offered on campus We also provide listings of newspaper databases and newspapers with free content on our website

A Closer Look: Databases + Journals We do not maintain lists of what journals we have in which disciplines – but you can view a listing of what electronic journals we have access to The resource is named “ULM Electronic Journals” and can be found through the “Databases by Name” If you want to determine what journals we have – and whether or not they are available electronically – you need to do a search in the ULM Library Catalog

A Closer Look: Databases + Journals If you are searching the Catalog for a journal, you will do a periodical title search – you will not be able to search for individual journal articles in the Catalog You will not have to login to use the Catalog remotely; but if you attempt to access an electronic journal, you will be required to login Accessing an electronic journal remotely is the same as accessing the databases remotely – it utilizes the same login information

Logging In Remotely Remember: if you plan to access the databases and/or ejournals from off-campus – also known as remotely – you will have to login to access those resources When you attempt to access the databases or ejournals, you will be prompted to login – this information is preset and cannot be changed  Username/ID: CWID  Password/PIN: MMYY  If you encounter problems logging in, please contact the ULM Reference Desk at (318) or

Logging In Remotely CWID MMYY Select ULM from the dropdown menu and…

Other Remote Resources In addition to the traditional research resources offered by the ULM Library, we also have a collection of tutorials that can help students navigate the Library’s resources. They cover such topics as:  Online Tour of the Library  Evaluating Internet Resources  Plagiarism  Quotations & Citations  “Library Sessions” for a variety of topics  And even presentations to help faculty!

Other Remote Resources: Tutorials – Step #1

Other Remote Resources: Tutorials – Step #2

Other Remotes Resources: Ask-a-Librarian We also have an online form that can be used to contact us – it leads to our account which is regularly

Other Remote Resources: Non-ULM OWL at Purdue: good resource for formatting, style, and citations for MLA and APA styles TED: Technology, Entertainment, Design – lectures and talks by some of the greatest thinkers and lecturers out there MERLOT: teaching and learning materials – exercises, assignments, and so much more!

Other Remote Resources: Non-ULM Youtube: not just for broadcasting video of your pets doing silly tricks and for looking up old 80s music videos! There are many useful channels for teaching and learning  Education  News & Politics  Nonprofits and Activism  Science & Technology  You can start your own channel, too!

Other Remote Resources: Non-ULM Facebook: a great way to connect with your students online and for announcements – you can even start groups and communities, post pics and video, and make connections with other professors, classes, students, and institutions (think of the collaborative potential!)  Resources like JSTOR and ARTstor have Facebook components  Organizations like the APA and the American Diabetes Association have accounts in Facebook
