Early Start Nicholls State University Spring 2012

Welcome Thank you for your support of the Nicholls Early Start program. We appreciate the opportunity to work with each of you.

Webinar Agenda 0 Students 0 Developmental Courses 0 Student Applications 0 Course Offerings 0 Banner 0 Board of Regent Scholarships 0 Early Start course instructors 0 Important Dates 0 Question and Answer Session

Developmental Courses 0 The Early Start program allows for students who meet the Board of Regents qualifications to enroll in developmental coursework through Early Start. 0 Nicholls does not offer developmental courses through Early Start. BUT, Fletcher and River Parishes Community Colleges do. 0 Fletcher contact: Nicol Blanchard, River Parishes contact: Dr. Crystal Lee,

Why is developmental courses in Early Start important? 0 In 2014, students will not be able to enter a public 4-year university as a first-time-freshman in the state of Louisiana if they are in need of one or more developmental course(s) This directly effects your current freshman and sophomore classes, and every class that follows them. 0 In 2014, students who need a developmental course, and wants to get a college degree, will be forced to enter a community college for their first semester. 0 Not all community colleges offer student loans, thus leaving some students out.

Who qualifies for developmental courses through ES? 0 Student qualifications: 0 An English or math course that generates postsecondary institutional credit, but not degree credit, and is designed to prepare the student for college-level instruction. 0 Student must be a 12 th grader/senior on track for completing the Louisiana Core 4 Curriculum. 0 Student must have a PLAN Composite score of at least a 14 or an ACT Composite score of at least 15 (or SAT equivalent) or WorkKeys Bronze Certificate.

Developmental Courses in your high school 0 Early Start allows high schools to teach developmental coursework on their campus, as long as the teacher is SACS qualified. 0 It’s up to your school to decide which community college you work with to facilitate earning credit. 0 Discuss with the community college you elect to use, what their qualifications for instructors are, to determine if you have a teacher in your high school who is eligible to teach a developmental course.

Student Application 0 Paper application 0 We are hoping that BoR will move to an electronic version for Fall No definite date when an electronic application will become available.

Student Application 0 When filling out the application: 0 Nicholls can not change any information on the Student Application. Therefore, the application must be filled out completely by each high school. 0 If the application is not complete, we can not process the application. The student will not be registered for courses until the application is complete. 0 To minimize billing errors, please indicate if Nicholls has permission to bill Board of Regents for your students on all Early Start applications.

Student Application 0 Nicholls can not change courses on student application. 0 If the course is closed (no seats available), the high school will be notified to make another selection. 0 If the student does not meet prerequisites, the high school will be notified to make another selection. 0 If you would like to try to minimize the back and forth with Nicholls: 0 you can check seat availability on Banner (instructions later in the webinar). 0 To check pre-requisites use our online Academic Catalog: /html/courses_of_instruction/ /html/courses_of_instruction/

Student Application 0 We realize that we will have to correct some applications, and that there is no way for the high school to know if a course will close by the time a paper application gets to Nicholls and is processed. 0 We will work with you, on an individual basis, as those things come up. 0 Our primary source of communication for those issues will be , there is no need to fill out a second application.

Course Offerings 0 Students must register for Nicholls courses that are on the Board of Regents matrix, and that also count in their high school curriculum. 0 Our course offerings are available now, via Banner. 0 Banner instructions were ed to you.

Banner 0 Banner works best with Internet Explorer. 0 Start at for links to the Banner site. 0 For direct Banner access: GenMenu?name=homepage GenMenu?name=homepage

Navigating Banner Search course offerings with “Class Schedule” No log-in required

Board of Regents Scholarships 0 Public high school students who meet the BoR scholarship qualifications are eligible for a $100 per credit hour (up to $300) for one early start course per semester. 0 Private and home school students are not eligible for BoR scholarship, and must self-pay. 0 Early Start rates for all students (public, private, and home school) for the Spring 2012 semester: 0 $100 per credit hour

Continuing Early Start Students 0 For a student to continue in the Early Start program, and receive a BoR scholarship: 0 Must maintain A, B, or C in all courses attempted. 0 If a student withdraws from an Early Start course, they may no longer qualify to take Early Start courses in future semesters.

ES Course Instructors 0 Teachers in your high school may already qualify to teach an Early Start course through Nicholls! 0 Please help us identify teachers in your high school that are qualified to teach Early Start courses.

Who can teach? 0 Early Start instructors must meet SACS requirements or qualify by exception. 0 SACS requirements include: 0 Faculty teaching baccalaureate courses: doctor’s or master’s degree in the teaching discipline or master’s degree with a concentration in the teaching discipline (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline). 0 Faculty of developmental courses: bachelor’s degree in the teaching discipline, or associate’s degree and demonstrated competencies in the teaching discipline.

Qualified by Exception 0 “Qualified by Exception” status designation requires the faculty to have related work experiences in the field, professional licensure and certifications, honors and awards, continuous documented excellence in teaching or other demonstrated competencies and achievements that contribute to effective teaching and student learning outcomes. 0 Using information provided by the faculty member in the ‘Matrix of Relevant Qualifications to Course Outcomes’ form, exceptional status designation will be determined by Nicholls faculty in the discipline. 0 Instructors requesting exceptional status must include a ‘Letter of Exception’ and ‘Matrix’ form.

Teacher Information Sheet 0 If you have a teacher who is qualified or thinks they can be qualified by exception, have them fill out the Teacher Information Sheet. 0 Teacher Information Sheets will be forwarded to appropriate Nicholls academic department for review of qualifications. 0 All Teacher Information Sheets are due to Nicholls at least 2 weeks before the start of the semester.
