Partner Questions: Defining Fear Define “Fear” in this story. Who is fearful? Of What? Why? What is symbolic in this story? What is ironic? How might this situation also be a metaphor for South Africa’s system of Apartheid? What might Gordimer’s message to her reader’s be?

Pass Book Assignment Select two quotes (one for each panel) that embody rich, sensory detail. Quotes should reveal insight into the deeper meaning behind the story (fear, fear becoming reality, symbolism, etc). Vividly recreate the quote (Gordimer’s language should paint a picture). Use color!!!

Final Gordimer Story What did South Africa look like towards the end of Apartheid? What racism and misconceptions still existed? With the end of Apartheid- does that really mean the end of prejudice- Do old ways die young? What is Gordimer’s message to her readers?
