Chapter 6 The Human Geography of the United States History and Government of the U.S

TSW Section 1  Objective: All students will be able to discuss the growth of the United States through migration and industrialization.

 Where did your ancestors come from? When? Where did they first settle?  What do you think life was like in your home town in the 1900’s compared to now?  What characteristics do you think you will find in the same place in the year 2050? Think about: population, infrastructure, crime, architecture etc..

Our Nation  The United States is the world’s third largest country in both land area and population. (China, India, U.S.)  We talked about where your ancestors came from. Why did they come to the U.S.?  What are some of our natural resources that make the U.S. rich?  This abundance in resources has attracted waves of immigrants who came to the U.S. for a better life.  Immigration is a recurring event in our country’s history and so is the migration of the people within the U.S.

Expansion and Survival  With your shoulder partner discuss how this picture illustrates expansion?  Also discus the way In which the United States acquired land? (page 136 & 137)

Louisiana Purchase  In 1803, the United States nearly doubled in size when the government purchased the vast plains region between the Mississippi and the Rocky Mountains from France. This territory became know as the Louisiana Purchase

Expansion and Survival  How many of you like camping?  With your shoulder partner, generate a list of items that you may need to go camping?  What happens if you don’t have these things?  Share your ideas with the class!  When Europeans settled in the America’s they began exploring the “New World”. Much like a camping trip they brought food with them but began to run out and needed to learn to live off of the new land.  Can someone explain the thought behind what the Columbian Exchange was?

Small Group Discussion Groups of 4  Give each group an issue: How was the U.S. was founded, How did the U.S grow, What were the patterns of settlement, Why did immigrants come to the U.S, Draw a diagram and summarize the Columbian Exchange?  Groups will discuss the issue and record all important points on poster board/ or paper. *Note we did not discuss all the events or thoughts about these issues, so be creative and resourceful when generating your points.  Teacher will appoint one person to speak for the group in summarizing the key points of their discussion questions to the class. These will be posted up on the wall (so be neat and creative). Everyone be prepared to share your groups findings!  Teacher refocus the thought about what makes the United States the United States. (history, economy, culture, and modern life pages 134).

The World’s Greatest Economic Power  The United States has the world’s largest economy-the most powerful, diverse, and technologically advanced in the world.  #1 In agricultural products, manufactured goods, and global trade.  U.S. accounts for more than 10% of the world’s exports.

Question : Comprehension  Describe three things the U.S is #1 in?  #1 In agricultural products, manufactured goods, and global trade.

Agricultural  The U.S. rich farmlands supply 40% of the world’s production of corn, 20% of its cotton, and 10% of its wheat, cattle, and hogs.  Identify what makes the U.S farmlands so rich?  Fertile soil, favorable climate, the early mechanization (technology).  Different Regions of the U.S. specialize in producing different crops.  Think about the word Postindustrial Economy- What do you conceive that word to mean?

Postindustrial Economy  The American Economy is driven by service industries. 3 out of 4 Americans work in this area of our economic sector.  Name a few service-related jobs? Information Processing Finance Medicine Transportation Education

Postindustrial Economy Manufacturing no longer plays a dominant role of the economic process.

America Today  With nearly 300 Million people United States ranks 3 rd in world population.  U.S. is a melting pot filled with many ethnic and racial groups.  80% of Americans live in cities or surrounding suburbs.  Americans moved first from rural areas to cities and then from cities to suburbs.  How was this shift to live in suburbs possible?  Because of the (invention & Diffusion) ownership of automobiles.

TSW  All Students will be able to classify and organize the United States into its 4 sub regions  All Students will understand major characteristics of the United States four regions.

Handouts  Highlight on your map the region you believe to be the Midwest.  Write down a brief description that explains why you selected this area.  Do the same for what you believe to be the Western, Southern, and Northeast Region of the United States.  Share with the class!  Only 5 minutes – so work quickly and individually.

Northeast  20% of the United States population lives here. One-sixth of the U.S. Population!  6 of these states in this area have coined the term “New England”. (Main, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut).  3 other major states include: Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey and are sometimes referred to as Middle Atlantic states.

Northeast WWhat are some natural advantages of the Northeast region? LLocation (along the Atlantic coast), Inland water routes (Trade, Commerce)

Growth of the Northeast MMajor industries emerged from this region in the early stages of the United States. CCoal, iron ore, steel, lumber, and oil- helped fuel the industrialization of this region. WWho can explain the term megalopolis? FFirst megalopolis developed in this region- D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. Stretches 500 miles through highly urbanized areas. NNew York is the country’s cultural and financial center WWith so many people in this region what becomes a major necessity to conduct business? TTransportation and Communication.

Northeast

Midwest  Contains the north-central states (12).  Called “Americas Heartland” and “Breadbasket”.  What does this refer to?  Fertile Soil, adequate rainfall, and favorable climate. This enables Midwesterners to produce more food and feed more people that other comparable areas of the world.

Midwest  What value does being in the middle of the United States bring to the cities that exist there?  Great interior water ways for transportation and trade. This makes the Midwest a excellent location for distribution.  This is a picture of Chicago, located near the shores of what Great Lake?  Lake Michigan  Chicago is the cultural, financial, and transportation hub of the Midwest.

Change in the Midwest MMidwesterners are now employed in providing services related jobs. South  Often referred to as the “Sunbelt” because of its climate and long growing season.  16 States of which 11 made up the Confederacy during the Civil War.  Vary diverse : Africans, Hispanics Cajuns, French-Canadian, Creoles of French, Spanish, and Cubans  The South’s warm climate, fertile soils, and many natural resources make it a great place for agriculture.  The South is rapidly changing and its cities are growing rapidly.

The Change AAgriculture was the first economic activity with cotton, tobacco, fruits, peanuts, and rice. LLivestock production in Texas and Arkansas is a dominant economic activity there. TThe climate draws millions of tourists and retirees to this region. IIn the 1950’s discoveries of energy resources gave a big boost to industry. WWhat are 4 energy resources we have a large amount of in the South? Oil Coal Natural gas And water

West  What comes to mind when you think of the West?

West 113 states that stretches from the Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean (includes Alaska and Hawaii). RRegion consist of ½ of the land of the U.S. but only contains one-fifth of the population. Why? DDramatic Landscapes (mountains, Deserts, Tundra etc..) CCalifornia our most populous state because of excellent farmland, good harbors, and a mild climate (beach weather). LL.A is the second largest city and the commercial center of the West.

Growth of the West  With the inventions of air conditioning and irrigation the West began to grow rapidly.  Water from the Colorado River has been diverted to serve areas in Nevada and California.  Seattle, Los Angeles, and Long Beach Have great harbors.  Good harbors make foreign trade with Asia easy and it is very important to our economy.  5 Major Economic Activates of the West: Filmmaking Tourism Computers Oil refining Farming What makes it easier to live in a hot environment?
