WHAT AFFECTS COMMUNICATION?  If a person is unable to see, hear or unable to receive the message because of another difficulty  If a person is unable to understand or make sense of the message  If a person misunderstands the message

WHAT AFFECTS COMMUNICATION? Visual Disabilities

WHAT AFFECTS COMMUNICATION? Unsuitable environments e.g. noisy, lack of light or unsuitable lighting

HOW CAN BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION BE PREVENTED? DISCUSS

PREVENTING BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION  Speak clearly  Don’t speak too quickly  Make sure that you are in a suitable environment e.g. quiet, not too busy  Listen carefully, using physical gestures and your eyes to express your interest

PREVENTING BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION  Make sure that you understand each other, by responding to what is being said, and repeating the message if necessary.  Use pictures to reinforce the verbal message  Use technological aids e.g. computer programs

BARRIERS ‘Tregwilym’, an Old People’s Home, is in the middle of a multi-cultural town. The clients have various difficulties, e.g. aural, visual and memory loss.

BARRIERS The health practitioners who visit the Home tend to use vocabulary which is full of medical ‘jargon’ when speaking to clients, and this creates difficult situations. a) Discuss the barriers to communication which are likely to exist in the Home. b) Discuss how these could be overcome.
