Region Types Regions are used to simplify study and understanding of the world. They share a common feature Two Main Types 1. Physical: Ex: Sahara Desert, Low Countries (Belgium and Netherlands), Rainforests, Taiga 2. Cultural: A similar human trait A. Language: Francophone World B. Ethnic: Chinatowns (neighborhoods), Kurdistan C. Religion: Muslim World (Middle East) D. Economic: Wheat Belt (Central US), European Union E. Political: NATO

2. Regional labels reflecting changes in perceptions Ex: Middle East, Southwest Asia, North Africa Sun Belt-Southern US from CA to FL Rust Belt-Midwest from Chicago to New York 3. Physical Environment influences Region Ex: Climate and Landforms Q: How might a mountain or a volcano influence a region? 4. Regions influence the inhabitants Ex. Architecture, Dwellings, Houses of Worship Q: If you live in the mountains how might your house and clothing be different than if you lived on flat- land?

Statues and Monuments Kaaba  Saudi Arabia The Kaaba is a rectangular stone building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is the holiest site in the religion of Islam.

Statues and Monuments Western Wall->Jerusalem (Israel) The Western Wall is located in Jerusalem. It is the holiest site in Judaism. The wall is all that remains of an ancient Jewish Temple.

Statues and Monuments Dome of the Rock  Jerusalem (Israel) The Dome of the Rock is in Jerusalem. It is the 3 rd holiest site in Islam.

Statues and Monuments Church of the Holy Sepulchre  Jerusalem (Israel) The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is in Jerusalem. It is holy to Christians.

Statues and Monuments Pyramids  Egypt The Pyramids are ancient tombs for Pharaohs in Egypt.
