Sex and Relationship Education Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)

 Unsafe sexual intercourse can result in pregnancies or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).  These are diseases or infections of the genital area (internal and external) that are spread from one person to another through the sexual fluids at intercourse, by oral sex or through genital contact.  There are over 25 different types of sexually transmitted infections.

1) If you had an STI you would be sore in the genital area 2) If you had an STI you would need to go to toilet more often than usual 3) Rashes, itchiness, sores and blisters in the genital area are symptoms of STI’s 4) Pain when passing urine and Having sex are symptoms of STI’s 5) You can’t get an STI if you are with the same partner 6) STI’s can be cured if treated quickly

 An STI is caught through having sexual contact with an infected partner.  They are very common and anyone who has sex can get infected.  The more partners you have, the more you put yourself at risk.  Some STIs can have long term complications such as infertility and cancer.

How do you catch them? They're easily passed from one person to another through close body or sexual contact. Treatment is simple and involves using a special cream, lotion or shampoo, which can be bought from a pharmacy. The Pubic Lice Introducing

Genital warts cannot be cured Genital Herpes cannot be cured. Symptoms? Feeling generally unwell, with flu-like symptoms such as fever, tiredness, headache, swollen glands, aches and pains in the lower back, down the legs or in the groin. Stinging, tingling or itching in the genital or anal area. Small, fluid-filled blisters anywhere in the genital or anal area, on the buttocks and tops of the thighs; these burst within a day or two leaving small red sores, which can be very painful. Pain when urinating (caused by urine touching the sores). Genital Herpes

 What is it?  Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection. It's caused by a bacteria found mainly in semen and vaginal fluids.  Symptoms?  Women might notice:  Unusual vaginal discharge - this may be thin, watery, yellow or green  Pain when urinating  Men might notice:  Unusual discharge from the tip of the penis - this may be white, yellow or green, and there may be inflammation of the foreskin  Pain when urinating.  Treatment?  Gonorrhoea is easy to treat with a single dose of antibiotics, either by tablets or injection. Infertility will result if it is not treated. Cells infected with Gonorrhoea

 Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It's a bacterial infection, which is found in semen and vaginal fluids. Up to one in ten sexually active young people has Chlamydia.  Symptoms?  Women might notice:  Unusual vaginal discharge  Bleeding between periods or during or after sex  Pain with sex or when passing urine  Lower abdominal pain  Men might notice:  White/cloudy, watery discharge from the tip of the penis  Pain when passing urine or painful testicles  What happens if it isn't treated?  Without treatment, the infection can spread to other parts of the body causing damage and long-term health problems, including infertility.infertility Cells infected with Chlamydia

 There are only two ways to avoid STIs – what are they?  If a person has sex for the first time s/he may actually be sleeping with dozens of people. How can this be?

 Do not have sex.  Only have sex with one partner for life who has only ever had sex with you.  Using a condom makes sex safer, not safe.  Reduce the numbers of sexual partners you have.
