Composing Draft 1 for the Research Paper “The Person I Admire” + Understanding and organizing your thoughts: intro, body paragraphs, conclusion 12/14/11

What is meant by the word CITATION? 1.Words within quotation marks which are directly spoken by another person. e.g. She responded, “I don’t know.’ 2. Words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs BORROWED from somebody else: e.g. According to Biography in Context, “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did not take to the game immediately, but with patient application he mastered the essentials”(27). 12/14/11

Annotate your sources -Highlighting is NOT annotating Steps: -Read your printed sources in order to find which 2 admirable traits the person you selected possesses -Identify the quotes (by highlighting, circling, underlining…) -In the margins, use the SMM strategy to annotate your quotations S- Says M- Means M- Matters 12/14/11

We’ll start by composing 1.Thesis + introduction 2.Body paragraphs 3.Conclusion 12/14/11

Introductory Paragraph: Introduce the thesis + Write the thesis To develop your introduction, you should follow the following 2 steps: Step 1:Introduce the thesis: “sneak peak” OR any strategy from the handbook, p Step 2: Thesis 12/14/11

Introduce the thesis: Sneak Peak (Strategy 1) Infer what a “sneak peak” sentence is by analyzing the sentence below: Sneak Peak: He is gigantic, gangly, and grand; a basketball icon he is, one’s success depend not exclusively on one’s talent. 12/14/11

Introduce your thesis: Strategy 2 “The other kids didn't appreciate the fact that I was a good student, and I was kind of singled out as an egghead, nerd kind of person,” acknowledges Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Not many students can claim that they successfully defied peer pressure in high school. -Turn to p and identify the strategy Ms. Teref used to begin her introduction. - Why is the word “acknowledges” bolded? Where else can we find words to use instead of “said?” 12/14/11

Introductory Paragraph: Thesis Step 2: Thesis = central idea of your essay that sums up your person without revealing too much and yet makes your person interesting. -Your thesis should be an arguable position. What does that mean? Why does your thesis need to be “arguable.” What does it mean to write “anticipating opposition?” -Words to use in a thesis: BUT,YET,BECAUSE HOWEVER, ALTHOUGH, NOT ONLY… BUT ALSO (coordination or subordination)

Example of thesis: Although many may claim that Kareem Abdul Jabbar is just another basketball player- celebrity, what cannot be overlooked is Abdul-Jabbar’s perseverance and caring not only in mastering the game of basketball but also in overcoming leukemia and promoting understanding of this crippling illness. -Which words have been bolded and why? -How many “things” is my essay going to examine?

1. Constructing Body Paragraphs Structure: a) Topic sentence and b) IDEA strategy ______________________________________ 12/14/11

Topic Sentences -What’s their function? -What should they look like? -Should they always have the same sentence structure? 12/14/11

Topic Sentence – sentence types Ideas for topic sentence sentence structure: 1)Coordination: Option 1:FANBOYS 2)Coordination: Option 2: semi colon 3)Coordination: Option 3: SV;_______, SV 4)Subordination: ______ SV, SV 5)Any other sentence types? 12/14/11

Topic Sentence – Example of Paragraph on Trait 1 Abdul-Jabbar has demonstrated perseverance throughout his career, for he faced many obstacles on his path to success 12/14/11

How to Integrate Quotations (page 29 of Handbook) What does it mean to integrate?

IDEA method I- Introduce the quotation D- Deliver the quotation E- Elaborate on the quotation A- Analyze it. How does it prove your point?

I- Introduce the Quotation Use a signal phrase (page 31 Handbook)

Combine Topic Sentences with the IDEA (Handbook, p.26) strategies in body paragraphs Topic Sentence: e.g. Abdul-Jabbar has demonstrated perseverance throughout his career, for he faced many obstacles on his path to success.  I= Introduce the quotation: e.g. According to Biography in Context,  D= Deliver the SHORT quote (using quotation marks, EXACTLY as the quote appears): e.g. According to Biography in Context, “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did not take to the game immediately, but with patient application he mastered the essentials”(Para.4).

 E= Explain the quote (elaborate on the quote, explain what it means): e.g. To be specific, although Abdul-Jabbar is exceedingly tall, which may make some believe he would automatically be drawn to basketball, he didn’t fall in love with it blindly. Rather, he patiently practiced and learned to love basketball.  A=Analyze (what kind of person is this based on your quote?) e.g. Clearly, it can be inferred from Abdul-Jabbar’s actions that he is not an impulsive, explosive man, but a very thoughtful, intelligent individual who shows patience and determination to succeed. (cont)

Analyze some more(how will the world benefit from this trait):e.g. The benefit to the world of Abdul-Jabbar’s perseverance is clear: here is a widely-known basketball player that millions of fans look up to and whose effort to master the game of basketball shows that although having a talent is a welcome gift, it is hard work and patience that set that person apart from a multitude of individuals who only rely on their talent. Follow the above 5 steps to help you develop your body paragraphs. Do NOT repeat the same SIGNAL PHRASES and TRANSITIONS (list of transitions:handbook) – only the steps!!!

Ms.Teref’s example of a body paragraph on Trait 1 1. C= Claim/Topic Sentence: Abdul Jabbar has demonstrated perseverance throughout his career. 2. I= Introduce the quotation: According to Biography in Context, 3. D= Deliver the SHORT quote (using quotation marks, EXACTLY as the quote appears): According to Biography in Context, “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did not take to the game immediately, but with patient application he mastered the essentials”(Para.7). E= Explain the quote (elaborate on the quote, explain what it means): To be specific, although Abdul-Jabbar is exceedingly tall, which may make some believe he would automatically be drawn to basketball, he didn’t fall in love with the sport blindly. Rather, he patiently practiced and learned to love basketball. 5. I=Inference (what kind of person is this based on your quote?) Clearly, it can be inferred from Abdul-Jabbar’s actions that he is not an impulsive, explosive man, but a thoughtful, intelligent individual who shows patience and determination. Follow the above 5 steps to help you develop your body paragraphs. Do NOT repeat the same words and transitions – only the steps!!!

In-text Citations: 1)When you credit a source in the introductory phrase, what happens to the parenthetical citation? According to Biography in Context, “Kareem Abdul- Jabbar did not take to the game immediately, but with patient application he mastered the essentials”(Para.4). 2) When you don’t credit the source in the introductory phrase, what happens to the parenthetical citation? In discussing this famous athlete’s struggle to become an outstanding basketball player, Jabbar’s coach explains, “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did not take to the game immediately, but with patient application he mastered the essentials”(Biography Para.4).

Now do your own body paragraphs Remember: 1 st body paragraph  “fascinating facts” about your person 2 nd body paragraph  trait 1 3 rd body paragraph  trait 2 Outline: topic sentence +IDEA strategy 12/14/11

Conclusion: Handbook, p.24-25: Read this section and mark the strategies for concluding an essay you might like to use for this research paper. -Your thoughts? 12/14/11

Conclusion: Ms. Teref’s example Example: Clearly, although he was considered “not cool” at school, and although it took him a long time to get into the game, Kareem Abdul Jabbar was unstoppable in his endeavor to become a capable athlete. Now, as an adult, he is fighting yet another challenge – cancer – but he will not be stopped.
