How Students Get Tutoring All students who want tutoring must sign up for the cost-free, no-credit course called IS47. All students must have a Student ID and must check in and out each time they come for tutoring. All students must sign the tutoring contract. Tutoring Contract (main points) All students must agree to do their own work and have questions for the tutor Tutors do not do student work, nor do they correct, alter, or provide answers to homework. This also means that tutors do not correct grammar. Tutors may not be used in place of class attendance or class reading Tutors will help with basic study skills as well as content knowledge

When is tutoring advisable? If the student is having trouble on tests If the student is having trouble keeping up on the reading If the student has time management issues If the student’s writing is disorganized, unstructured, or not addressing topics If the student needs help solidifying understanding of concepts

What about grammar and ESL issues? Grammar and ESL are addressed by teachers, not student tutors. Students with grammar issues must enroll in a grammar class and work on assignments to learn what they need. Tutoring can help, but cannot address all that a student may need in grammar or ESL.

How is Grammar Addressed? Students need to commit to the time needed to learn the grammar. This means enrolling in a grammar lab class and doing assignments (ENGL 900, 940, or ESL 901). Students need to come in every week to do assignments and practice grammar. Progress is only made after several sessions.

What will teachers see if a student gets regular tutoring? Gradual improvement of skills commensurate with the amount of time and effort put in by the student Writing that improves over time, not instant “perfect” papers Deeper understanding of concepts underlying applications More engagement in the learning process

Ways to suggest tutoring Say: “Go to the tutoring center and find a tutor to meet with on a regular basis.” Do not say: “Go to the tutoring center and get your paper checked/signed off before turning it in.” Please encourage the adoption of good academic habits. Telling a student to get her paper “checked” or “signed off” encourages her to put the responsibility on the tutor, not on herself, to learn and apply the skills she needs.

What Teachers Can Do Help students know what type of help they will receive in the tutoring center Align expectations with what the tutoring center can provide. Help students understand the basic skills (language, prerequisites) they need to be successful at Mission…and in life.

What Students Can Do Take the necessary prerequisites for the course (i.e., language). Build your reading skills and make the most of your resources. Be an active learner, not a passive one. Ask for help with study skills.
