SAFIO Student And Faculty Interaction Opportunities A great way to get to know and interact with students outside of the classroom

Philosophy Outside play and break time is very important to a child’s development and growth. Besides providing important physical exercise it is a time for our students to learn through movement, play and social interaction. Our students sometimes need supervision and direction to help them structure their playtime. We love to interact with students during this time because it is a wonderful learning opportunity for staff also. We help by making sure students are following the rules, treating each other and property with respect, and making sure that students are supervised, nurtured and safe in order to best learn in a healthy and worry-free environment. Learning about free play, learning about our students, and getting to know our students in meaningful ways outside of the classroom can be a great pick-me-up to our day!

SAFIO teachers are expected to: Move around and maintain order Remind students of the rules Report incidents (repeat offenders, areas needing coverage, etc.) Get students attention when you hear the hand bell (this bell rings as a warning three (1-2) minutes before the electronic bell). Make up for missed duty and arrange your own coverage (from your team) if needed. Interact in positive ways with the students. Have a keen and acute sense of supervision over their areas of responsibility.

Students should not : Run in the halls or stairwells. Stand or walk on benches Have any food or drink (except water and sports drink) outside of the canteen. Play by the Church, in Admin. bldg, the Middle School or the Swiss School. Make unnecessary noise or disruptions to classes or offices. Be disrespectful toward anyone in any way.

When students don’t follow the rules…. They should be told: a) what they are doing wrong b) the proper way(s) they should be acting c) how they can change their behavior. They should sit down where they are for 15 minutes or the rest of the period (which ever is longer). They should take responsibility for their actions (apologize, clean up, play correctly…) They should be sent to the office if a major or repeated infraction occurs. Wrongs are always righted in respectful, positive, learning oriented styles.

Covered playground SAFIO # 1 Road, covered Court, play area, Back of science Labs. No food. No rough play. Don’t put sand all over.

More SAFIO # 1 Covered playground behind KG SAFIO position is usually along here

More SAFIO # 1 covered playground This area is for K-2 indoor soccer – use the green fuzzy soccer ball = safety. Grades 3-5 do not play soccer here. Send them to the large soccer fields at the front of the school.

Play area- SAFIO # 2 This SAFIO position is in the center of the play area. Be aware of kids playing too rough, straying into the middle school or students too small for, or playing unsafe on, the equipment. In addition, slow students down if they are running in or near dangerous areas.

More Play area SAFIO # 2 This SAFIO also includes the back of the playground and the area towards the middle school breezeway.

Breezeway- SAFIO # 3 This SAFIO position includes the breezeway area, hallways, stairs and steps on both sides.

Breezeway # 3 Monitor student play Ring the bell 1-2 minutes before the electronic bell Keep students off the stairway by the main office

Breezeway # 3 Biggest concern? RUNNING IN THE HALLWAY

ES Canteen (upstairs) / Play area # 4

Try to get to this duty as quick as possible. There is a lot of action in the first 15 minutes. ES Students should be sure to clean their own tables. About half way through the period move downstairs to the playground area.

ES Canteen (upstairs) / Play area # 4 Students are allowed to use small amounts of water only in the sandbox. No food outside the canteen except for water and sports drink.

More SAFIO ES Canteen(upstairs) / Play area # 4

Soccer field SAFIO # 5 Students should not be playing too rough.

More SAFIO # 5 Soccer field

Covered Playground (yellow court) SAFIO # 6

SAFIO # 7 ES/MS canteen ES Students should be sure to clean their own tables.

Clinic Area SAFIO # 8 Only injured or sick students should enter the clinic (no friends). ALSO: Monitor the flow of students to the library. They should only be going up and down one time. Please ring the bell 1-2 minutes before the electronic bell. There is a handbell inside the doors to the clinic. Clinic

Clinic Area SAFIO #8 and the back breezeway

When being outside is not safe…what is our plan? RAIN – is the usual culprit, but this plan could be used for other reasons The next 3 slides explain where the students will go and who will supervise them.

When the heavy rains hit…send grades KG – gr. 2 to rooms E104 and E105 for board games and movies. SAFIO teachers from #1 and #2 will go to E104. SAFIO teachers from #3 and #4 will go to E105

When the heavy rains hit…send gr. 3 – gr. 5 students to room E401 for board games and movies. SAFIO teachers from #5 and #6 will go to E401.

When the heavy rains hit…students may decide to go to the library. SAFIO teacher #7 and #8 will go to the Elizabeth Library

Expectations Be on time Monitor student behavior Interact with students Don’t be distracted by talking with others or reading or paperwork. Speak to students or take action when they are not meeting behavior expectations.

Missing? Make it up? As we talked last year there were some things we decided as a staff. If you know you will be missing a SAFIO slot, speak with someone on your team or department to see if you can’t trade days with them. If nothing can be worked out, let Ms. Chu know in person or by and she will arrange a substitute

About SAFIO “Supervision duties and Break and lunch are part of the Full Time Teacher’s responsibilities. They are not included as part of the teaching periods. The Principal assigns supervision duty. If the Principal recommends exceptions, approval of the Head of School must be obtained. Teachers who have less than normal teaching loads[,] are expected to substitute for other teachers when asked by their Principal” (RIS ES Faculty Handbook , p. 1000/1). Ideally SAFIO duties change from quarter to quarter. Sometimes it is the period that changes and sometimes it is the location of the SAFIO.
