Oh Joy! It’s time to learn about: Chronological Organization!!! Please take out your rough draft and all C/C Materials. Take everything else off your desk!

ORGANIZATION There must be chronological organization aligned throughout the essay. Title, introduction of novel titles, thesis content organization and topic sentence subjects must be aligned. Likewise, the three points of comparison, as stated in thesis order, should be stated in the same order within the body, and again in the conclusion. Confused yet?

Other Worlds: Dynamic Elements of Magic Realism in Like Water for Chocolate and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. (HOOK): Symbolic dreamscapes, surreal exaggerations, and the illusion of timeless reality encompass Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold. (Thesis): Esquivel’s LWFC and Marquez’ Chronicle of a Death Foretold reveal magic realism through the literary elements of dreams, hyperbole, and sense of time. While Like Water for Chocolate expresses a far more dreamlike atmosphere with exaggerated scenes, Chronicle stresses the supernatural world of dream symbolism but less use of hyperbole. Both novels have a unique sense of time, but while LWFC is more linear, Chronicle promotes a far more sophisticated style of magic realism by avoiding a chronological plot.

Outline: Note Alignment Like Water for Chocolate 1 st standard of comparison: dreams 2 nd standard of comparison: hyperbole 3 rd standard of comparison: use of time Chronicles of a Death Foretold 1 st standard of comparison: dreams 2 nd standard of comparison: hyperbole 3 rd standard of comparison: use of time

Task for the rest of class: Self Edit for: – Chronological order and alignment – Word Choice (avoid: very, many, thing, stuff, I/You, and any superlative word choice – Grammar/Spelling Titles are italicized Avoid run-on sentences Proper Semi-colon usage (joining two independent clauses). Ensure author’s names are spelled correctly

The Great Gatsby

Creative Pre Write for Gatsby Gatsby is a man who creates an identity for himself. Pretend you have just relocated to New York City and are living in the opulent times of the Jazz Age: The Roaring 20s! Create a new identity to take with you: thinking of a new name for yourself (a name that represents a special, fantasy version of your life during this time). Then, write a brief biography of this fantasy version of you. What would you want to become? Write in 3 rd person- creating further intrigue and mystery from an outside perspective. What might people say about you? Misconceptions? Stories? Rare qualities?
