World History Patterns of Interaction

 Nationalism: believe that people should be loyal to their own country  Many Indians believed that the English were not only controlling their land, but also making them convert to Christianity  Constant racism towards the Indians

 Economic problems increased for the Indians as did the feeling of resentment and nationalism  Rumors spread that the cartridges of the Indian rifles were greased with beef and pork fat  The Hindus consider cows sacred and the Muslims do not eat pork were outraged by the news

 /90 Sepoys refused their new cartridges  The 85 soldiers were jailed, the jailing led to a rebellion by the Sepoy  The sepoy marched to Delhi and joined other sepoy already stationed there  They captured the city and then moved to northern and central India  Events have been called both the Sepoy Rebellion and the Sepoy Mutiny

 The fighting took place throughout India  Both sides wanted to destroy the other sides army  EIC took a year to regain control of the country, with help from British soldiers  Lack of leadership and fighting between the Hindus and Muslims caused for the lack of unity and the English to regain power

 Hindus did not want the Muslim Mughal empire in command they preferred the British  Many princes and governors aligned with the EIC and did not take part in the mutiny  The Sikhs, hated the Mughals and were loyal to the British and became the major contributors to the British army in India

 Because of the mutiny the British took total control of India in 1858  The Raj: part of the India government under control by the British  British rewarded many of the princes who were loyal to the EIC by sticking to the treaties and laws that were signed  India states were still free but were under more control by the English  Racism and mistrust increased due to the Mutiny

 Ram Mohun Roy: “Father of Modern India” believed that India culture needed to change to rid the country of outsiders  Wanted religious practices to be modified  Wanted to have more say in their government  Many wanted India to be modernized and westernized

 Felt like 2 nd class citizens in their own country  Barred from top posts in the India Civil Service  Paid less then Europeans  An English Engineer made 20Xs more then an Indian engineer

 India National Congress: 1885 (INC)  Muslim League: 1906 (ML)  At first both groups concentrated on specific concerns by the 1900s both wanted independent rule  Problems of division continued through India for several years  Struggles of all of Europe over their countries would lead to many more problems over the years
