BEYOND CITATION: Using NoodleBib to Organize and Synthesize Research Information Christy Batelka SLM

INTRODUCTION: Whenever you’re required to include a bibliography page for an essay or a research paper, you’ve probably relied on NoodleBib. This subscription source is a fabulous tool to ensure the accuracy of your citations, both in their content and in their format. But did you know that you can actually use NoodleBib for so much more than just your bibliography page? Today we’re going to explore the other tools NoodleBib has to offer you as you move through the steps in the Big6 Research Process!

Let’s Review the Big6 Research Process: 1. Task Definition 2. Information Seeking Strategies 3. Location and Access 4. Use of Information 5. Synthesis 6. Evaluation

Using NoodleBib with the Big6: NoodleBib has traditionally been viewed as a reference tool to assist students in publishing their research during the 5th step of the Big6 research model. Citing sources is necessary to avoid plagiarism. Since NoodleBib’s addition of its new notecard feature, students can and should take advantage of this reference tool during their actual location, use, and organization of information for a research paper.

OBJECTIVES FOR TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Students will view the online tutorial to understand NoodleBib’s new notecard feature. Students will use SIRS Knowledge Source subscription service to locate information on two opposing viewpoints. Students will organize and synthesize their information using NoodleBib’s citation and notecard tools.

PROCEDURES: STEP 1 1. In order to understand how NoodleBib can assist you during your location and synthesis of information, click on the link below and work through the online tutorial about NoodleBib’s new notecard feature. 2. Be sure to pay careful attention, as you will be using the notecard tool with information you retrieve later in this lesson!

PROCEDURES: STEP 2 WOW! Did you have any idea that NoodleBib could be so helpful with your actual research process? Let’s quickly review what the NoodleBib notecard feature allows you to do…

PROCEDURES: STEP 2 (cont’d) Once you have created a citation for a source you want to use in your research, you can generate custom notecards. Notecards are divided into three sections: Direct Quotation, Paraphrase, and My Ideas. First you copy and paste the information from the source into the Direct Quotation section. Then you paraphrase the quoted material in your own words in the Paraphrase portion. Finally, you have a spot in the My Ideas section to jot down your own original ideas, thoughts, questions, etc., about the source information. You can then print the notecards you’ve created to use while drafting your essay.

PROCEDURES: STEP 3 Now that you’ve seen how helpful NoodleBib can be during the actual location and synthesis part of your research process, it’s your turn to test it out! Your ultimate goal today is not to write a research paper. Rather, it is to practice locating, using, and organizing relevant information that you would use if you had to conduct research for a written assignment.

PROCEDURES: STEP 3 (cont’d) So here it is… Imagine your teacher has asked you to write a persuasive essay on whether or not television and the media have a negative impact on today’s youth population. In order to make an informed decision, you’ll need to research both sides of this issue.

PROCEDURES: STEP 3 (cont’d) Today you will be responsible for: 1) locating one source to support the affirmative position (yes, media is harmful) and one source to support the negative position (no, media is not harmful) using the SIRS Knowledge Source database 2) creating MLA citations in NoodleBib for each source 3) using NoodleBib’s notecard feature to record notes, organize information, and synthesize ideas for each position 4) printing the bibliography page and notecards you’ve created to earn credit

PROCEDURES: STEP 4 Open the ikeepbookmarks page and click on SIRS Researcher. Click Here

PROCEDURES: STEP 4 (cont’d) Sign into SIRS Researcher using the following username and password: Username: MD1570H Password: 21042

PROCEDURES: STEP 4 (cont’d) Click on SIRS Knowledge Source.

PROCEDURES: STEP 4 (cont’d) SIRS Knowledge Source includes a PRO vs. CON page listing top controversial issues. You’ll want to view this entire list by clicking on the “More Issues” link. Click Here

PROCEDURES: STEP 4 (cont’d) Locate the link for “Violence in Mass Media” and click on it. Click Here

PROCEDURES: STEP 4 (cont’d) Use this page to search, locate, and retrieve one article or website to support both sides of the media and technology issue. Print each article out.

PROCEDURES: STEP 5 Now that you have selected and printed one article to support each position of the media and youth issue, you’re ready to use NoodleBib.

PROCEDURES: STEP 5 (cont’d) Open the ikeepbookmarks Online Databases page and click on NoodleBib. Click Here

PROCEDURES: STEP 5 (cont’d) Sign in to NoodleBib using your personal ID and password (Since we’ve used NoodleBib before, you should already have a personal account set up. If you have trouble with this, please see me.).

PROCEDURES: STEP 5 (cont’d) Once signed in, you’ll need to click on the link for NoodleBib.

PROCEDURES: STEP 5 (cont’d) You’ll want to start a new list in MLA Advanced format. Title your list “Media and Youth,” and create citations for the two sources you located and printed using SIRS Knowledge Source.

PROCEDURES: STEP 6 Now that you have a bibliography page set up for your media and youth research, it’s time to practice using the notecards feature. It’s important now that you recall the information you learned from the tutorial at the beginning of this lesson!

PROCEDURES: STEP 6 (cont’d) For your first citation, click on the link for the notecard tool. You will be creating a new notecard for that source. Click Here

PROCEDURES: STEP 6 (cont’d) Title your notecard and add information to the three tabs of your notecard for this source: Direct Quotation Paraphrase My Ideas

PROCEDURES: STEP 6 (cont’d) When you’ve finished, print your notecard for this first source. Repeat Step 6 for your second source.

WRAPPING UP: You should now have two printed notecards to turn in for credit. More importantly, you should have a working knowledge of how NoodleBib can assist you in working through the steps of the Big6 Research Process. Take out a sheet of looseleaf paper and record your answers to the questions on the next slide:

WRAPPING UP: (cont’d) 1. How can NoodleBib assist you in your research process? Be specific! 2. How can NoodleBib’s notecard feature help you to avoid plagiarism? 3. Do you think you will use NoodleBib’s notecard feature for future research-based assignments? Why or why not? 4. Was this lesson successful in helping you to understand the various tools NoodleBib has to offer? If not, please explain.

Please turn your question responses in with your notecards. Thanks for working very hard today!
