The 3 R’s of Conservation By: Katherine Pease 7 th Grd Science, 2010

Conservation Efforts that help prevent shortages of natural resources, slow growth of landfills, reduce pollution levels, and save people money.Efforts that help prevent shortages of natural resources, slow growth of landfills, reduce pollution levels, and save people money.

What harmful things do we use conservation to help protect the world from? Pollution Landfills Greenhouse effect

Pollution: is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem

Landfills: also known as a dump or rubbish dump, is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is the oldest form of waste treatment.

Greenhouse Effect: is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere trap energy from the sun.

So how do I protect the earth from these harmful things? The R’s –Reduce –Reuse –Recycle

Reduce To reduce your use of natural resources you help in conservation. Examples: –Use paper versus plastic –Ride your bike versus riding in an automobile –Use products with less packaging –Use products made from recycled products

To use a natural resource again in the same way or in a different way Example: –Reuse plastic grocery sacks to line small wastebaskets

Recycle A form of reuse that requires changing or reprocessing an item or natural resource. Materials to Recycle –Glass –Metals –Paper –Plastics –Yard and kitchen waste

Recycle Plastics Due to several different types of plastics, it is one of the hardest to recycle It is important to separate types due to the fact if 1 item from a different type is mixed into a batch, the whole batch is ruined. Types are: –Type 1 – soft drink bottles –Type 2 & 4 – plastic bags –Type 6 & 7 –are unable to be recycled

Recycle Metals You can conserve metals by recycling food cans and aluminum cans. It takes less energy to reproduce cans from recycled aluminum then from raw materials. If you recycle cans, then it open more space up in our landfills.

Recycled Glass Glass can be recycled over and over. It never needs to be thrown away. Recycling one metric top of glass can save one metric ton of mineral resources It cuts the energy used to make glass by 25%.

You can do your part y recycling newspapers, notebook and printer paper, cardboard and junk mail. One metric ton of recycled paper saves: –17 trees –More than 26,000 liters of water –Close to 1,900 L of oil –More than 4,000 kw of electric energy

Compost A way of turning plant material you would otherwise throw away into rich garden soil. Examples –Grass clippings –Leaves –Fruit and vegtables scraps –Non meat food scraps
