The Origins of the Universe Presented by Julian Yoo

Reflections on a Mote of Dust "We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

An Introduction I am not a scientist. I am not studying science. These issues are incredibly complex. This is not a debate of whether science or religion is right and one is wrong. For more in-depth information, go to a library or check out articles on the Internet. Don’t fall asleep!

Common Misconceptions Science is against spirituality and religion. Organized religion thinks science is false. Enjoying, studying and understanding science is a sin. Science claims to know everything. Scientists are atheists trying to play God. Science and religion are perfect.

The Claims Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. Sun is 5 billion years old. The “Big Bang” set off a chain reaction that would eventually form the universe we are in now. Theories are continually being changed and revised as new information is collected.

Biblically Speaking… Earth is about 6000 years old. The universe was created by God through spoken word. The Bible is the only tangible, existing evidence that documents this. Although Christian & Catholic laws, rules and doctrines may change, the basic idea of intelligent design remains.

The Importance of Dates Dates are important because we can guess how old the Earth is. The dates that scientists have discovered contradict what the Bible tells us. Scientists use a variety of different methods, some which you may heard of: Carbon-dating, radio-isotopes, looking at the layers of Earth, etc.

The Big Controversy Creationists believe that humans sprouted into fully developed homo sapiens, along with animals. Scientists adhere to the Theory of Evolution, which basically states that life evolved from one organism to another. Many people who do not believe in evolution do not understand the concepts very well or at all.

Theories Theories are the highest level of certitude an explanation can have in science. They aren’t made up on the spot but thought about by thousands of scientists around the world. Although theories aren’t fact, they are the best explanation of how or why things occurred through observation and experimentation.

Evolution

Ad Hominem Religious people may be looked down upon due to their lack of education in fields that are being debated. In the same vein, scientists and atheists alike who refute the Bible usually take things out of context or don’t read it at all. Both parties are at fault at times which shows how imperfect humans and their ideas are.

Final Words Educate yourself! Defend your faith but don’t try to pick fights with people who oppose your beliefs. Asking questions is OKAY! If you have questions, ask Pastor Dave or better yet, do your own research first and then ask someone who knows more.
