.ng Domain Name - the Future of IPv6 in Nigeria Ope Odusan Chief Operating Officer Nigerian Internet Registration Association Tel: You Are Nigerian! Are You Dot.NG ?

. ng is Nigeria’s country code, and implicitly, a Nigerian identity on the internet.  This important national resource is managed by Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA)  The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) was founded on March 23, 2005 as a stakeholder-led organisation, charged with the management of the nation's Country Code Top Level Domain Name (ccTLD),.ng..  NiRA's establishment was the end of a long period of inactivity and dispute on the appropriate management of this important National Resource. Coordinated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). Stakeholders within Nigeria’s Internet community participated in its formation.  Our Current Executive President is Mrs Mary Uduma who heads the 8 members executive board and Dr. Adeola Odeyemi, Chairman, 9 Member BOT. You Are Nigerian! Are You Dot.NG ? NiRA-Background

What is a Domain Name ? You Are Nigerian! Are You Dot.NG ? In the Beginning …… US Defence Dept. DARPA Project started the Internet. Computers use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)- Internet Protocol (IP) Addresses to Communicate. Humans Prefer letters. IP is much more difficult than domain name : odusan.name.ng, hence the birth of Domain Name System (DNS). Domain Name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control on the internet. A Domain Name represent an Internet Protocol resource. Domain Name are organized in subordinate levels (subdomains) of the DNS Root domain. Top Level Domain (TLDs) represent the first level, this include generic top-level domains (gTLD) i.e..com,.net, etc and the country code top-level domains ccTLD like.ng

You Are Nigerian! Are You Dot.NG ?.ng Registry Design  3R Registry Model  Public WHOIS server on port 43  Public WHOIS web interface  EPP interface for the registrars  Escrow backup with Cocca  Stealth Primary Server  SSH with user & IP restrictions

Secondary Name Servers  ns1.nic.net.ng I  Internet Computer Bureau  ns2.nic.net.ng  (PCH)  ns3.nic.net.ng  Dynamic Network Services (USA)  ns4.nic.net.ng  Dynamic Network Services (USA)  nsa.nic.net.ng  Nigeria

Registry Power Design  Motorized Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR) for each power source  Double Power source  Dual Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)  Multiple Power packs in each equipment  Remote monitoring of power, with ability shutdown devices remotely

 Vastly expanded IP address. IPv4 (32 bits) vs. IPv6 (128 bits). More Devices can be supported because each additional bit doubles the size of addresses available.  Current IPv4 will run out soon.  Current IPv4 based website may have accessibility problem with users using IPv6 based network.  Increasing Digital Content need more address space to grow You Are Nigerian! Are You Dot.NG ? IPv6 –Why is it Important

 The structure of the.ng Registry and the availability of characters and figures afford certain advantages. i.e. 9jafashion.com.ng vs fashion.com  The possibility of introducing new second level domains to serve specific trades or interest groups. i.e..sch.ng  The potential of exploiting the diverse languages in Nigeria to create personalized domains.  Register your name as your domain i.e. odusan.name.ng You Are Nigerian! You Are Nigerian! Are You Dot.NG ? IPv6 and Broadband Growth Drivers

 Electronic Numbering (ENUM) is a protocol developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to allow the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the Internet to interoperate.  ENUM allows telephone numbers to be resolved to URLs using a Domain Name System (DNS)-based architecture. By placing telephone numbers into the DNS, ENUM can facilitate interoperability for a wide range of applications including Voice over IP (VoIP), video, presence, and instant messaging. DOMAIN NAME (IPv6) The Next Telephone ‘Number’ You Are Nigerian! Are You Dot.NG ?
