What Makes A Best-Selling Video Game? Our idea is to compile information from different sources and try to find what is the secret formula of video game development. We got some help from EA games, who helped us a lot making this project. They even gave us some information on their experience with game development! Many people will say all teenagers are looking for is gore, and all children want is superheroes, but there is a much deeper formula than that.

Console Sales This is a console sales chart for the Wii U, PS4, XBOX One, PS Vita and 3DS. These sales are since the consoles’s release. But all the dates are different! The 3DS was released 26 th of February Whereas the Ps4 was released on the 15 th of November That’s nearly two whole years before! So the reason for the 3DS's outrageous sales numbers are explained. But it is still more than double the PS4's sales. So its sales numbers aren‘t just because of it being the oldest console on the chart.

Innovation? Many people believe that innovation and exciting ways to play the game are key to sales and popularity but in fact many pieces of evidence we have found point to the contrary! There have been 20 Mario games (not counting spin-offs like Super Smash Bros) since Super Mario bros’s release on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) in This game came to be the start of a very long series of games, which would go on to sell 240 million copies. In super Mario there is one objective in all the games, save the princess via jumping around, etc. So why have any other games apart from the first one sold if they are more-or-less all the same?

Video Game Developers Cutting- Corners? Another example of a game franchise with games that are nearly the same is Call Of Duty. In Call Of Duty there is 2 modes (Three for some games) They are Campaign and multiplayer. In the campaign players fight against NPCs (non-player characters) and we found a case where infinity ward, the game developers, copied a cut-scene from “Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2” to a more recent game “Call Of Duty Ghosts”. Advertising Advertising has a huge effect on game sales. In 1978 IGA (in game advertising) was created. This was a an advertisement for new games that would appear when a gamer would play a game but gamers found this annoying and distracting with only 20% of gamers responding back to the advertisement. Television advertisement however had a more successful outcome with 74% of gamers responding to the advertisement. Gamers say that they find IGA distracting and television advertisements more appealing. Sometimes if there is a celebrity in advertisement it can promote game sales. clash of clansclash of clans

What age groups are playing what games. It is the law that video games must place an age rating on a game. They can rate from PG to 18+. So lets see does age difference have an effect on game selling? Destiny 16+: 5, 000, 000 US dollars Lego Batman 2 PG: 7, 000, 000 US dollars We compared other videogames and the same result 90% of the time came back. Younger gamers seem to buy more than older players because the majority of younger gamers have their parents buy the games while the majority of older gamers are buying the games with their own money which causes their expenditure to rise so video games are bought more rarely.

Conclusion In the conclusion we found out that every age group has a different taste, but also a different bias. As teenagers buying might be influenced by what he bought as a kid. And adults might crave nostalgia and buy games that they played in their youth. Children Most Children have zero criticism towards games. As long as it has whatever character they are into at the moment. (e.g. Spider-man, Ben 10) The only thing that really turns a child of a game is if its themed towards the other gender. Adult Adult gamers are not actually as scarce as you might think. The majority of children and teenagers imagine themselves gradually growing out of video gaming. But a lot of adults still play games and its not a sign of childishness. But its just a case of why give up something you enjoy doing if you don‘t have to? Don‘t get us wrong we're not saying adults should just play video games all day and live off their parents income. But if they play in moderation. Gaming doesn’t have to be quit. Adults are VERY socially influenced, so suggestions from friends and family will go a long way. Also, not unlike teenagers they will buy games their friends have to play online with them. So in the case of adults it is just a matter of socialism. Teenagers A new breed of game has come to dominate the gaming industry. These are First Person Shooters. A type of game that has become increasingly popular among adults and teenagers alike. As we mentioned before Call Of Duty is an on going series of games that are, more or less, the same. But every new game has more and more copies sold! These games also have a social aspect in multiplayer mode. For teenagers this is the highlight of Call of Duty games. So like Adults there is a social influence of what teenagers buy.
