I am responsible…  Everyone to know their HIV status.  Young people to delay having sex for the first time.  Young people to delay to make informed choices to prevent unwanted pregnancies and HIV infection.  Faithfulness and use of condoms always.  Pregnant women to test for HIV early.  Those with TB to test for HIV, those with HIV to test for TB and get the right treatment.

We are responsible…  Couples to talk about their relationships, test for HIV together and be faithful to each other and always use condoms.  Men, women and families to support pregnant women so that they can protect their children from HIV.  Communities to provide care and support to the infected and affected by HIV including orphans and vulnerable children.  Communities to take action and speak out against violence against women.  Communities to stop stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV.

South Africa is taking responsibility  Government and all sectors of society represented in the SANAC are providing leadership to ensure that every South African can: Prevent HIV infections. Know their HIV status. That pregnant women can access Prevention of Mother to child Transmission services. All those with TB can access TB drugs and all HIV positive people can access Anti-Retro-viral (ARV) treatment.

HIV Prevention  Abstinence.  Faithfulness.  In any new relationship- Both be sure of your HIV status.  Use condoms each time you have sex.  Avoid sex when drunk.  Avoid sex in exchange of money.

Importance of VCT  VCT enables people to know their HIV status.  It helps to prevent new infections.  It enables people to make reproductive choices. E.g. termination of pregnancy.  VCT relieves stress.  It enables one to seek healthcare timeously e.g. ART and opportunistic infections.  It helps to prevent TB.

Importance of VCT cont’d…  VCT helps to prevent stigma and discrimination.  It encourages people to practice safer sex.  Clients counselled April-Dec (09/10) =  Tested for HIV April -Dec (09/10) =  Tested Positive April -Dec (09/10) =

PMTCT 1.Prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV is amongst the priority interventions based on the NSP which expect the Province to:  “ Scale up coverage and improve quality of PMTCT to reduce the MTCT to less than 5% by 2011” and to achieve the Mellinum Development Goals ( MDGs)  MDG 4:Reduction of child mortality by 2/3  MDG 5:Improve maternal health by reducing maternal mortality rate  MDG 6:Combat HIV & AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

2.The Provincial progress on implementing the PMTCT:  (100%)All Facilities with Antenatal services offer the service with increased:  Increased number of Pregnant women 78285/83912 (93%) from (90%) Pregnant women tested/ ANC bookings in 2008/9  Increase number of pregnant women receiving ARVs prophylaxis received ARVs /14006 Tested HIV+ (79%) from 58% in 2008/9 due to the increase in early Antenatal booking at Primary Health facilities.  Reduced number of HIV exposed babies testing HIV positive 787 tested HIV+/6054 babies exposed (13,5%) from 18% in 2008/9.

Importance of Disclosure of HIV status  It enables one to get support. e.g. family  It relieves stress.  Disclosure enables one to access healthcare services.  It helps to protect other people from infection.  It helps to promote adherence.  It enables one to live longer.  It promotes productivity.  It enables one to get information on the disease. E.g. support groups.

Addressing stigma and discrimination  Self-acceptance.  Disclosure.  Attend support groups.  Learn more about HIV and AIDS.  VCT, more people should know their HIV status.  Educating the community e.g. human rights.

How to live with HIV positively  Disclosure.  Eating a balanced diet.  Exercise.  Practising safer sex.  Self-care.  Relaxation.  Recreation.  Religion.  Doing things that make you happy.  Avoid stress.  Avoid alcohol and drugs.

Importance of partnership in fighting against HIV and AIDS  There is a need for everyone to be involved in the fight against HIV and AIDS.  To speak in one voice.  To bring resources together.  To obtain new development in HIV and AIDS.  To reach the goals of the NSP.
