Chapter 4 Section 4 The New Kingdom

Ahmose founded a new line of pharaohs and thus began the New Kingdom. Egypt became richer and cities grew. The Egyptian empire was formed at this time.

Hatshepsut Thutmose’s III stepmother had no interest in war Built temples and traded with others for ivory, ebony, monkeys, dogs, animal skins, and leopard skins Egyptians never saw these things and welcomed them.

Hatshepsut’s Mummy ABC News: Lost Queen Unveiled

Thutmose III Used an army of 20,000 to control Syria and Palestine Great military leader

Thutmose III

Religion Egyptians began to worship a new god God of Thebes-Amon When Thebes became the capital, Amon was combined with Re New God=Amon-Re Most powerful Egyptian god

Egyptian Writing Used Hieroglyphics to inscribe monuments and tombs Scribes needed an easier way to keep track of records They made a new system of writing that combined two types of writing and hieroglyphics. Connected words like cursive

Decline of Egypt Pharaohs lost power to the priests of Amon-Re In 1370 BC, Amenhotep IV took the throne. He didn’t like priests and closed all temples to Amon-Re He also set up a new religion.

Amenhotep

Amenhotep’s Religion Wanted Egyptians to only worship one god….Aton. He changed his name to Akhenaton, which means “spirit of Aton” Only a few accepted his new religion.

Amenhotep died in 1360 BC and his son in law Tutankhamen became pharaoh. King Tut….boy king….priests made him return to the old religion. Died after only nine years in power
