Paul And Peter Galatians 2:6-19

Paul’s Apostleship Galatians 1:11-24 Verse 16 Purpose for which Jesus appeared to him. 1."To reveal his Son in me" cf. Acts 9:5 "that I might preach Him among the Gentiles." cf. Acts 26:16-18; 9: "Conferred not with flesh and blood." cf. Acts 9:20 "Straightway." a.Paul did not learn what he knew from others, but by revelation. b. Not behind any of the apostles. 2 Corinthians 12:11

Verse 17 Paul did not go to those who were apostles before him … 1. Paul went to Arabia – returned to Damascus. a.cf. Acts 9:23-25 "many days" in Damascus. b.Jews took council to kill him. cf. 2 Corinthians 11:32-33 (escaped in a basket let down through a wall).

Verse 17

Verse 18 "After three years." Probably from the time of his conversion. cf. Acts 9: "Went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas." Paul’s first visit to Jerusalem following his conversion. 2. "Tarried fifteen days" … time too short to be taught of Peter. Acts 9:26-30; 22: Verse 19 On this visit Paul saw Peter and James, the Lord's brother.

Verse 18 "After three years…" Fifteen Days

Verse 21 Taken secretly by the disciples from Jerusalem to Caesarea – sailed to Tarsus in Cilicia. (Acts 9:26-30; 22:17-21) Barnabas later came and brought him to Antioch (Acts 11:25-26).

Verse 22 Paul yet unknown by face to the churches of Judea. Paul was known by the disciples in Jerusalem (Acts 9:26-30). Yet, not by the "churches" in the area around it.

Verse 23 Note the dramatic change they heard about Paul. "Times past.." (cf. 1:13; Acts 9:21) "He now preacheth the faith." (verse 23)

Verse 24 "They glorified God in me."  The gospel which Paul had sought to destroy, was THE SAME GOSPEL which he is now preaching.  The Judaean churches glorify God.

Verse 1 After 14 years Paul went up with Barnabas, Titus & "certain other brethren" to Jerusalem. cf. Acts 15:2  Paul made three trips to Jerusalem. 1.Acts 9:26ffGalatians 1:18 2.Acts 11:27-12:25 3.Acts 15:1-5Galatians 2:1ff Paul’s Visit To Jerusalem

Verse 2 1."Went up by revelation"-  Paul did not go up to learn the gospel.  The trip to Jerusalem was more than a request of the brethren in Antioch. cf. Acts 15: Paul laid "before them the gospel" he preached among the Gentiles. a.The disciples in Jerusalem must understand the consistency of what Paul preached. (cf. Acts 15:4-5, 12; 25:14-21) b.Paul did not preach a "different gospel." The Occasion

Verse 2-5  Met those who were "of repute" (pillars, verse 9) (Acts 15:6)  Met "false brethren." verse 4  Was unyielding, "no not for an hour." verse 5

The Outcome Verse 6-9 Peter apostle to the Jews. Paul "apostle unto the Gentiles" (Acts 9:15; 22:17-20) 1. The same gospel was preached to Jews and Gentiles! 2. Fellowship extended.

Peter’s Apostleship Saw miracles:  Walked on the water. Matthew 14:28-30  Transfiguration. Matthew 17  Witnessed the resurrection. Acts 2; 3; 4; 5 Performed miracles:  Healed lame man. Acts 3, Aeneas 9:32-34  Raised Dorcas. Acts 9:40

Peter’s Visit To Antioch  Peter had taught the truth in Jerusalem. Acts 2:21; 10:34-35; 11:12; 15:7ff  Now is the hypocrite. Galatians 2:11-19 –First ate with Gentiles. –Separated himself. –Feared the circumcision. –Others carried away.

The Outcome  Paul confronted Peter. Galatians 2:11-19  Paul's equality with Peter demonstrated.  Peter's respect for Paul undiminished. (cf. 2 Peter 3:15-16)

The Outcome  Peter described Paul as "our beloved brother Paul." (2 Peter 3:15-16)  Peter acknowledged the "wisdom" given to Paul.  Peter recognized Paul's epistles as "Scriptures."

Lessons Courage of Paul. –Refusing to concede to pressure by false brethren. –Stood alone. –Rebuked a respected brother. Humility of Peter. –Love for a brother, desire to go to heaven. Both left EVERYTHING to follow Jesus. Paul – (Philippians 3) Peter – (Luke 5:11)
