Automotive Applications of Tribology Applied Tribology from Flywheel to Tyres

AIM THE AIM OF THE PRESENTATION IS TO COVER THE TRIBOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE TRANSMISSION AND POWER TRAIN

Introduction What is Tribology? Tribology is the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. Tribology includes boundary-layer interactions both between solids and between solids and liquids and/or gases. Tribology encompasses the entire field of friction and wear, including lubrication.

Important Components Of An Automobile Bearings Flywheel Clutch assembly Transmission system Propeller shaft and CV joints Brakes Tires

Losses In An Automobile

JOURNAL BEARINGS Rolling element Bearings Hydrodynamic Bearings (journal bearings) Magnetic bearings

Engine bearings The Mobility technique for the analysis of dynamically loaded engine bearings, assumes that the hydro dynamically generated load capacity due to pressures in the lubricant film balances the applied load, thus precluding the possibility of instability effects as inertia loading is neglected. The technique has proved amenable to simple computerised analysis yielding the cyclic minimum film thickness, an important design parameter, amongst other predictions.

TRANSMISSION GEARBOX AND DIFFERENTIALS The mtrl of the gearbox used should be of such a type that there is minimum heat generation during the transmission and max transmission moreover the wear at the gears, which is essentially adhesive, must be essentially minimized to least limits possible. Stress Distribution On A Gear Teeth.

PROPELLER SHAFT AND CV JOINTS The propeller shaft and CV joint should be capable of transmitting max power with minimum wear and losses. Major types of wear in this portion are creep and fretting.

BRAKES AND TYRES The material used for brakes is mainly asbestos due to its high frictional properties as well as resistance to wear and abrasion. It also dissipates heat at decent rates so as to avoid overheating of system components.

The material used for tyres is mainly vulcanized rubber for better friction properties so as to have a firm grip on the road and avoid vehicle skidding. Due to its hardness, the rate of wearing for the particular material is also slow.
