What is Kwanda?… National television that communicates a powerful social message A major community development project that impacts on hundreds of thousands of lives A tool for the television audience to participate in a network or community of people changing and improving their communities

Kwanda partners GovernmentDept of Social Development, Dept of Health, SALGA, 6 municipalities and CWP Professional expertise Crew of Development professionals and training professionals, many drawn from Soul City Training Partners, media professionals, and other specialists Community Social capital Networks of institutions within each community, formal and informal, churches, schools, CBOs… Participants Teams of community members working together to make a difference, initially 50 from each community which will grow over the next six months to around 1,000 people in each community Sponsors and Media MTN, BP, DfID, CDC, PEPFAR, and SABC1 to create engaging television and contribute to empowering citizens to improve their lives

Challenges thatKwanda teams addressed Economic Development Creating enterprises - sewing, baking, farms, establishing community work programmes in each community; Kwanda Klothing Fashion show Social Development Support for OVCs - creating feeding schemes, getting families registered for grants, getting children to school - addressing HIV prevention, especially multiple concurrent partnerships, addressing alcohol abuse and alcohol related violence Building social capacity Strengthening relationships with municipalities, businesses, local NGOs, faith- based and community-based organisations

Kwanda’s Reach 500 participants 200,000 members of host communities benefit 500,000 people communicate with Kwanda via sms, letters, print, online 2,000,000 viewers and listeners each week

What happened in Rustenburg? OW learning process Mass training method that enables participants to organise themselves Experiential learning Activity based learning, engaging participants in issues affecting their communities: HIV and Aids, OVCs, Alcohol abuse and poverty

What the Kwanda teams do? Prevent new HIV infections Organise HIV testing in their community. Support One Love Campaign. Launch PMTCT campaign Support vulnerable children Drive SNOC agenda - transform the local school into a place that not only educates but also helps protect vulnerable children - plant a food garden and create a feeding scheme to make sure every child in their community is eating properly Improve incomes Create new sewing, agriculture and building enterprises Address violence and alcohol abuse Build capacity to act against unsafe drinking and violence, ensure alcohol-free schools and safe places for children, Ensure shebeens and taverns stick to their licensing conditions and improve safety in and around taverns.
