How does it help your child? International research ( PISA 2000) has shown that “Being enthusiastic about reading and a frequent reader was more of an advantage on its own than having well-educated parents in good jobs” Research has also shown that keen readers perform better at school than those children who are equally capable but read less. Everyone needs opportunities to choose books to read for enjoyment- it helps EVERY area of the curriculum.
What can you do? Invite your child to read with you every day – keep reading time relaxed in a quiet area Ask about the book – what do you think it will be about ? What kind of book is it? Prediction – stop and think. What will happen next? Get involved – what is your favourite character? Why do you like them? Why do you think they behaved like that? Use the text for clues – finding the meaning of a word. Talk about the follow up work – it is given for a reason! Make reading positive – don’t correct too quickly. Allow self- correction time. Model your own good reading habits!
