Matthew Crist Age: 17 Lives in Exeter, NH School: Junior at St. John’s Prep in Danvers MA Current interests: robotics and engineering Future Aspirations: aeronautical engineering

Sean LaMontagne Age 14 Grade :Freshman lives in New Castle, NH (on the water across from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard ) School: Will be a Freshman this Fall at Portsmouth High School Current interests: Military Simulation Airsoft, Member of the Portsmouth NH Police Cadets, Kayaking, Skiing, Skateboarding Future Interests/Aspirations: To continue to work on the Seacoast Team's Submarine for ISR 2013, and I hope to Join the military.

Matthew Notaro Age:17 Grade: Senior School: Royal Academy and Home School Future Interests: I am pursuing an appointment to the US Naval Academy. My dream is to become a Naval Architect/Marine Engineer and design submarines or warships for NAVSEA.

Michael Cargill Age: 16 School: GBeCs ( Great Bay e Learning Charter School) Exeter New Hampshire and also attending Seacoast School of Technology for Pre-Engineering in Exeter. Michael enjoys computer gaming and programming, he also loves working with tools taking things apart and recreating them. Future endeavors include engineering with a special interest in robotics.

Team Leaders Ms. Young Town - Rye Position: nuclear engineer at Portsmouth naval shipyard Current interests - hanging out with my children; improving our country's competence in STEM subjects Future goals - put siding on the house before the snow flies and work to make America a great place for my grandchildren to raise their families. Team Goals The team was started in order to bring an interest in the STEM areas of education to the seacoast of New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts The team had an aspiration to learn more about submarines and engeneering Short term goal: modify propeller on existing submarine Long term goal: build a complete submarine for 2013 based on experience and knowledge gained in 2011

Design of Submarine The Sub was designed by Wheaton Sub Works. The major piece of equipment that we made improvements on was the propeller The goal of the 2011 race is to get idea for what works and implement that on our complete submarine in 2013.

Control Surfaces The bow, stern plane, and stern rudder Are controlled by cable wires and a lever

Propulsion Power comes from a cut down bike system The sprocket system turns a bevel gear box The gear box turns the shaft using a LOVEJOY coupling

The propeller design was based off of the Kappel design. Testing of the angles were performed in a small scale in a basin Built by welding students at SST Propeller Design

Buoyancy Control Pieces of Styrofoam were cut to about cubic inches to balance out the propeller 25lbs (1 in 3 / lbs per inch 3 )

Testing The propeller design was tested in a small scale basin in which we tested the speed at which a boat equipped with a specific pitch of blade traveled the distance changing the pitch to find the best angle to come up with the most effective pitch There were two test dives in the UNH dive basin

Budget The submarine was borrowed and about $ was spent on miscellaneous parts such as paint, handles for the cradle, high performance putty compound, etc. The propeller was made out of scrap metal donated to the team Large grant from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for work on base.

More Information on Our Team We all came together 6 months ago from different schools. Nobody knew each other. In 6 months we have accomplished many things. In part it was due to great leadership and initiative from our 2 leaders. We are all here because we made the decision to do so. Not for just for school credit. We worked every Thursday night for the better part of 6 months to get to where we are today. We have created friendships and gained a great deal of knowledge.
