Today’s Question Does foreshadowing build suspense for future events? How?

Suspense Suspense – Suspense – anxious curiosity about what will happen next in the story some Genres that are suspenseful: some short stories horror thrillers mysteries etc.

What is Suspense? What is she doing that shows she is feeling this way? Draw a stick person version of this picture Show the facial expressions This woman is feeling the suspense. In other words, she is feeling the anxious curiosity about what will happen next in the story If an author describes facial expression in this way – he is trying to build suspense!

What is Suspense? If an author makes you question what is going to happen next, and doesn’t tell you the answer right away or “leaves you hanging” then that is SUSPENSE Draw this picture.

What does suspense feel like when reading a book? Anxious Curiosity = You can’t put the story down until you know what happens On your paper, describe a scene in The Lightning Thief was suspenseful or full of suspense. What part was suspenseful for you? Turn and Talk about it.

Ways to Build Suspense 1. Foreshadowing –Hints or clues suggesting what will happen later in the story.

One way that writers create suspense in a story is to foreshadow, or hint at, future events. A writer uses foreshadowing to plant interesting clues for the reader. If someone throws a brick through a character’s window, we have a hint that something dangerous may happen in the character’s future.

8 Ways an author can foreshadow future events subheading: 8 Ways an author can foreshadow future events 1.Title or names of characters 2.Pictures 3.Flashbacks 4.Setting: names of places, description of the place 5.Personification (verb – personify) – describing objects as if they are acting like people would 6.Repetition – repeating of words, sounds, or actions 7.Narrator’s voice (describe it and tell how you could make the narrator’s voice suspenseful) 8.Complications - events in the story that complicate the protagonists life

Narrator – character or non- character that is telling the story (Not the same as the author)

Flashback – when the narrator or a character thinks back to an event in the past and tells the reader about it *Flashbacks can be a way to foreshadow future events and can build suspense

Copy into notes: Personification – Copy into notes: Personification – when something that is not a person is described as a person (verb – to personify) Repetition – the repeating of words, sounds, or actions

Complications -Events that make it more difficult for the protagonist to get what he/she wants. These events happen before the climax during the rising action.

Genre – type or category of writing Motivation – reasons why a character did what they did
