Pre-Retirement Recall Agreements

Pre-Retirement Recall Academic Senate Faculty may enter into Pre-Retirement Recall Agreements prior to retiring. These agreements permit them to teach up to 3 courses per year for up to three years immediately following their retirement, subject to satisfactory performance. Pre-Retirement Recall Agreements are for teaching only. These instructions are related to those agreements and do not apply to agreement to recall retired Academic Senate faculty for research or administrative service.

How to determine Emeriti Faculty teaching salary on a Pre-Retirement Recall Agreement The initial per-course salary for Emeriti Faculty teaching on a Pre- Retirement Recall Agreement is explicitly stated in each MOU. The amount is equal to one-ninth of the faculty member's pre-retirement faculty base salary, that is, equal to the salary for his/her rank and step at retirement, not to exceed Professor, Step VII. Off-scale amounts are not included. Each quarter-course generally represents a 33% quarterly appointment percentage (an 11% annual appointment percentage), unless another agreement has been made between the Emeriti, Department Chair and the Dean. An example of an appointment less than 11% might be teaching a graduate seminar with 3-4 students. During subsequent years of appointment, an Emeriti Faculty member's salary is increased by the amount of any general COLA provided to the faculty up to Professor, Step VII. There are no merit increases for Emeriti Faculty teaching on a Pre- Retirement Recall Agreement.

PPS Entry for Emeriti Faculty teaching on a Pre-Retirement Recall Agreement The DOS code REG is used for payments made to Emeriti Faculty teaching courses on a Pre-Retirement Recall Agreement. Emeriti Faculty teaching courses on a Pre-Retirement Recall MOU are paid on a 9/9 basis. Therefore the appointment percentage is typically 33% per quarter course. You will need to adjust the pay rate to ensure that the amount paid to the faculty member equals his/her 1/9th rate.

Example #1 Professor Smith retired effective 7/01/2007 as Professor, Step VII. The AY base salary rate for that rank and step (Table 1) at the time of her retirement was $113,500. Her 1/9th rate was $12,611 ($113,500/9). On October 1, 2007, faculty at that rank and step received a 6.61% range adjustment. Professor Smith taught 1 course in Fall Quarter 2007 and 2 courses in Winter Quarter What was she paid?

Example #1 Sample Calculations Professor Smith was paid $13, for Fall Quarter Determining Initial Per-Course Payment $113,500 Professor VII base salary on 7/01/2007 9Divided by 9 months (academic year) $12,611.11One-Ninth Rate – the total payment for each quarter course Applying 10/01/2007 Range Adjustment $121,000Professor VII base salary on 10/01/2007 9Divided by 9 months (academic year) $13,444.44One-Ninth Rate – the total payment for each quarter course

Example #2 If Professor Smith taught the same number of courses during Fall 2008 and Winter 2009, how would her pay change?

Example #2 - Answer Her pay would be exactly the same, because faculty received no range adjustment on 10/01/2008.

Example #3 Professor Singh retired as a Professor Above Scale at the same time as Professor Smith. He has a Pre-Retirement Recall Agreement that calls for him to teach 1 course during the Fall Quarter and 2 courses during the Winter Quarter, the same as Professor Smith. How much more than Professor Smith does Professor Singh earn on a monthly and annual basis?

Example #3 - Answer His pay would be exactly the same as Professor Smith. Pre-Retirement Recall Agreements are capped at the Professor, Step VII rate.
