Advent starts on the 1 st December – we open our Advent Calendars every day in December
We send Christmas cards in December to wish friends and family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Some children go to a special church service in December called the They carry oranges decorated with sweets and lit with a candle.
We have a tree and we decorate our houses
At school the children take part in a special Christmas play and all the parents come and watch
On Christmas Eve (24 th December) we leave a drink for Father Christmas and a carrot for Rudolph the reindeer. Father Christmas delivers the presents whilst we are asleep.
On Christmas Morning children open their presents. Many people go to church. In the afternoon people eat a special meal – most people have roast turkey, roast potatoes, vegetables (like sprouts!) and stuffing. Some people have beef, goose, or duck.
For desert we might eat Christmas Pudding or Mince Pies
The Queen makes a special speech on Christmas Day, it is shown on television.
The day after Christmas Day is called Boxing Day. Most people do not need to go to work, and spend the time with family and friends.
On New Year’s Eve (31 st December) people have parties and celebrate. In London Big Ben chimes 12 times for midnight and everyone cheers and sings an old song called ‘Auld Lang Syne’. You might see fireworks.
January 6 th is called Epiphany. It is the day we remember the journey of the 3 Wise Men or Kings to visit Jesus. It is also the day everybody takes their decorations and Christmas trees down.
