A Bright Future A New Look at Accreditation Curriculum Leaders, Friday, Oct. 12, 2012

Kansas Accreditation is… Q + P = A

A Change in Approach/Mindset A broader view of a School’s Quality Much more takes place in School Personalized Focus: Allowing Choice Focus on Intangibles

Current System: Quality 1A school improvement plan 2An external assistance team 3Local assessment aligned with state standards 4Teachers trained in state standards and assessments 5In assessed areas, all teachers must be certified 6Board policies meet Local graduation requirements meet the state requirements

Current System: Quality 8Curricula that meet the regent’s admission requirements 9Elementary and middle schools that offer computer literacy, counseling services, fine arts, etc… 10Secondary schools that offer business, FACS, etc… 11Policies ensuring compliance with other accreditation regulations and laws

Current System: Performance % at standard or above in reading and math 95% take the state assessments Attendance rates at or above 90% Graduation rates at or above the state standard

Assumptions A new accreditation system for Kansas schools needs to reflect a broader approach to quality than AYP in reading and math. The focus will be on a transition to 21 st century standards and College and Career Ready Standards. Accreditation will be at the district level. Accreditation and Non-Accreditation and perhaps some other distinctions like Accredited through growth Accredited with distinction
