Implementing the Common Core

Why Develop a Set of Common Core State Standards? 3  Preparation: Prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in postsecondary endeavors  Competition: Ensure our students are globally competitive  Equity: Set consistent expectations for all--and not dependent on a student’s zip code  Collaboration: Create a foundation to work collaboratively across states and districts, pooling resources and expertise

45 states, D.C. and the Department of Defense Education Activity have fully adopted the Common Core State Standards and Minnesota has adopted only the ELA standards. Common Core State Standards Adoption (as of June 2012)

Common Core ELA Standards Four strands  Reading (including Reading Foundational Skills)  Writing  Speaking and Listening  Language Three appendices A: Research and evidence; glossary of key terms B: Reading text exemplars; sample performance tasks C: Annotated student writing samples

1.Regular practice for all students with complex text and its academic vocabulary 2. Reading and writing (speaking and listening) grounded in evidence from text 3. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts 1.Regular practice for all students with complex text and its academic vocabulary 2. Reading and writing (speaking and listening) grounded in evidence from text 3. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts GETTING STARTED ON THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS for LANGUAGE ARTS 6 Key Shifts in ELA Standards

Common Core Mathematics Standards Standards for Mathematical Practice  Carry across all grade levels  Describe habits of mind of a mathematically expert student Standards for Mathematical Content  K-8 standards presented by grade level  High school standards presented by conceptual theme Appendix  Designing high school math courses based on the Common Core State Standards

Three Major Shifts in Mathematics Focus strongly where the standards focus Coherence: Think across grades and link to major topics within grades Rigor: Require conceptual understanding, fluency, and application

Mathematics topics intended at each grade by at least two-thirds of A+ countries Mathematics topics intended at each grade by at least two- thirds of 21 U.S. states International Comparison 1 Schmidt, Houang, & Cogan, “A Coherent Curriculum: The Case of Mathematics.” (2002).

Mathematical Practices 1.Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2.Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4.Model with mathematics. 5.Use appropriate tools strategically. 6.Attend to precision. 7.Look for and make use of structure. 8.Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Opportunities for Charter Schools  Alignment with curricula  Assessment  Many high performing charters already use text dependent questions  Many high performing charters already innovate when it comes to the use of technology and how to better serve at risk populations  Standards can support  Project based learning  Cost savings on materials  Opportunity to use formative assessment tools aligned to standards
