Objectives Provide information to parents on: Advantages of the report card’s format Standards-Based Grading (SBG) The look of the report card The schedule for trimester reporting periods

What is Standards-Based Grading (SBG)? In a standards-based reporting system, teachers report what students know and are able to do relative to the Common Core and/or Core Curriculum Content Standards.

What does SBG include? o Defined learning targets instead of points/percentages o Various forms of assessments o Record keeping that allows teachers to adjust learning practices to meet the needs of students o Student reflection and responsibility Increase in Student Achievement

What Will the New Report Card Look Like????

What Are the Components? Standards Behaviors That Support Learning (BTSL) English Language Arts Math Descriptions of Standards User-friendly terms of the students’ learning targets Grading Scale Labels Reading Level Teacher Comments

Behaviors That Support Learning This category describes skills important to a student’s ability to be successful in school. Work habits Social and Emotional Development Ability to Self Regulate Behavior Reported from kindergarten to 6 th grade and skills are assigned using a rubric.

Example of a BTSL page

English Language Arts Reading Literature Reading for Information Foundational Skills Writing Speaking and Listening Language Reading Level

Example of the ELA section Clicking on a standard will open the box that gives more descriptions as to what that standard entails Note: This slide does not have audio.

Reading Levels Reading Levels are reported using assessments from the Fountas and Pinnell Leveling system. Students “reading” in Kindergarten are expected to move through a number of levels and may use texts from level A in the beginning of the year through level D as they exit the grade. A description of texts in each of the levels in the Fountas and Pinnell system is enclosed in the Parent Handbook.

Math Counting and Cardinality Operations and Algebraic Thinking Operations and Numbers in Base Ten Measurements and Data Geometry

Example of the Math Standards Section

Example of Math standard selected Description of skills included in the standard Note: This slide does not have audio.

Teacher Comments A drop down dialogue box is available in the English Language Arts section. Teachers will write comments to give a more personal description of your child’s progression in class for the 3 major areas.

Haley is a wonderful student. She has been working hard to be successful in school and is an eager participant in all classroom activities. In the next trimester we will begin to place more emphasis on reading and the skills needed to be a good reader. It is my hope that she will have learned more of her letters and sounds by that time so she can being to read grade level text. In math we will continue to build on the foundation placed in this trimester’s work. We will be moving on from activities using counting and cardinality and beginning to explore the properties of addition and subtraction. Haley needs some minimal support in counting but with continued work in school and completion of the homework activities I am confident she will be successful with the new material. Thank you for all of your support in the first trimester...Great job Haley! Note: This slide does not have audio.

Grading Scale Labels EX – Exceeding grade level cluster of standards ME – Meeting grade level cluster of Standards PM – Partially Meeting grade level cluster of standards NM – Not Meeting grade level cluster of standards NI – cluster of standards Not Introduced

The Scale is Progressive Students work throughout the year to accomplish all of the requirements of the standards. Do not be alarmed if your child receives performance indicators of NM or PM for the first or second trimester s the skills will be revisited and reinforced. Your child’s teacher will communicate to you if there are specific areas of concern. By the end of the year, we expect students to receive performance indicators of ME or EX.

Parent Handbook More information regarding the Standards-Based report card is available in the Parent Handbook located on the Margaret Clifford School website, located under the Kindergarten tab.
