Disciplined Service Sept. 18

Think About It … What are some places in the church you have served in the past? You may or may not have felt you were good at that particular task … – Today  we look at how God wants believers to serve in church ministries

Listen for how the church is like the human body. Romans 12:3-5 (NIV) For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. [4] Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, [5] so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

Work Together What warnings or admonitions does Paul give in verse 3? What did Paul use the human body to illustrate? Agree or disagree …  The point is, that both are equally important Paul is saying no one believer is more important than the other … all are equally important. It’s more important to have an eye than an ear AgreeDisagree

Work Together Why do you think Paul began with a warning against pride? He goes on to describe spiritual gifts. How can we be tempted to think too highly of ourselves when we put spiritual gifts to work? What does it look like when a believer underestimates his or her value to the church?

Work Together How could that kind of thinking hinder spiritual health … both for the church and for the individual? What should be our attitude about service to the church provided by fellow believers?

Listen for different kinds of gifts Paul mentions. Romans 12:6-8 (NIV) We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. [7] If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; [8] if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

Serve Through Giftedness What diversity of gifts are listed here? Why do you think Paul stressed grace before mentioning specific gifts? What happens when someone tries to do work or ministry outside the area of their spiritual gift?

Serve Through Giftedness Which brings to mind a quote from Robert Heinlein (or Mark Twain), “Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.” – pigs are not gifted to sing – you probably aren’t gifted to teach music to pigs … don’t bother trying

Serve Through Giftedness Other gifts from other passages: The gifts are diverse. How are the gifts meant to foster unity? wisdom knowledge faith healing miracles distinguishing between spirits tongues interpretation of tongues helps administration evangelists pastors hospitality service apostles

Listen for how we need discipline in serving. Romans 12:9-15 (NIV) Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. [10] Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. [11] Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

Listen for how we need discipline in serving. [12] Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. [13] Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. [14] Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. [15] Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

Grow Good Character What connections do you see here between using spiritual gifts and demonstrating love? What words do you see here that demonstrate how we are to put our spiritual gifts to use?

Grow Good Character Considering the gifts we studied in the previous passage (12:6-8), what would it look like to use them without love? Paul talks about detesting or hating evil, how does that show love What are practical, meaningful-to-the- recipient ways to honor other believers for their service (especially those whose work is behind the scenes)? GiftUsed without love Prophesying Serving Teaching Encouraging Contributing or giving Leadership

Application None of us should think overly highly (or lowly) of ourselves – All believers are members of the Body of Christ … the church – We belong to one another, we are interdependent – Who is depending on you this week?

Application God gives gifts of grace to every believer – It is God’s choice – The purpose is for the good of the whole church, not for self-enjoyment – Put your gift to work!

Application Loving fellow Christians includes showing honor to others – Christian love includes help for the saints and hospitality to strangers – This week, be aware of opportunities to help others – Watch for strangers who need your hospitality
