STAT!Ref New User Interface

The simplest way to search STAT!Ref is to enter the search term into the field at the top of the page and click the Search button.

STAT!Ref will look for your search term in every title and searchable resource you subscribe to and present you with a list of the Results found.

There are five STAT!Ref filters that display under the heading All STAT!Ref Results. They are; Codes, Drug Information, Patient Information, Point of Care and Titles By Discipline. Filters are pre-defined groupings of titles that logically fit together. Whether a filter is visible or not depends upon the titles in your subscription and whether or not the filter is relevant to the search.

The Titles By Discipline filter has a number of sub-filters, which are groupings of titles by their primary discipline.

If you are only interested in drug information click on the Drug Information filter. The Results list will change to reflect only those titles that relate to the selected filter. The titles that are associated with a filter display below it. If you want drug information from a specific source, such as Mosby’s, click on that title and your Results list will change to reflect only Mosby’s Drug Consult. To return to the original state of your Results just click the All STAT!Ref Results filter.

In addition to searching its titles, STAT!Ref also searches other resources, such as MedCalc 3000, the National Guideline Clearinghouse and PubMed. Results for these resources display under Additional Resources. Click on the resource you are interested in viewing and STAT!Ref will launch that resource in a separate browser window and execute the search for you.

If you click on the “MedCalc 3000” link, under Additional Resources, it will launch “MedCalc 3000” in a separate browser window with the term (in this case “diabetes”) already searched.

A list of the related concepts for the term searched will display under Related terms. Related terms come from the National Library of Medicine’s UMLS Metathesaurus database. Click on any one of the listed terms to re-execute your search for that specific term or click on the “Add All Related Terms” link at the bottom of the list to your search using all related terms.

Each Result displays in its own tile. They are ranked in their order of relevancy. An excerpt shows the best matching phrase in the document.

To page through your Results list click on the “Results Page x” link. A maximum of 100 documents display in the Results list. They are grouped into ten documents per page. To hide or show Excerpts click on the “Excerpt” link. Each Result tile displays an excerpt (200 characters) of text surrounding the best match found in the document. To get detailed information about the criteria that was used to perform your search click on the “Search Details” link. To lookup your search term in Stedman’s Dictionary click the “Stedman’s Definition” link. Stedman’s will launch in a separate browser window.

To view the document click on the Result you want.

The title’s name will appear directly above the document. Each match will appear in red with the highest ranked match highlighted in yellow.

To change the document’s font size click on the “Font” link, To print a document click the “Print” link. To print a portion of the document, highlight the text you want to print and click the “Print” link. When the Printer Dialogue Box appears choose the “Selection” option. To lookup a term in Stedman’s Dictionary highlight the term in the document and click the “Look Up Term” link. Stedman’s will launch in a separate browser window. To move to the next or previous Result shown in the Results list click the appropriate “Results” arrow. To move to the next or previous Match found within a document click the appropriate “Match” arrow.

Another way to search STAT!Ref is to use Advanced Search settings. Click on the “Advanced Search” link to the right of the Search button to view your options.

Using Advanced Search you can configure your search settings before executing a search.

To change the precision settings (a.k.a Boolean Operators) that STAT!Ref will use click on the “Precision” drop down menu and select the precision. To include related concepts or suffixes check either the “Include Related Concepts” or “Include Suffixes” option. These two options are mutually exclusive. To use a Search Set click on the “Search Set” drop down menu and select your search set. To select one or more titles check the box next to the title(s) you want to search.

Once you’ve selected your Advanced settings enter the search term into the field at the top of the page and click the Search button.

Your Advanced settings will continue to be used for all future searches until you tell STAT!Ref to reset the default settings or until you log out. To stop using Advanced settings click on the “Reset search to default settings” link that is highlighted in yellow just above the first Result.

Another way to retrieve a document is to browse the Table of Contents.

Click on the Table of Contents tab to see a list of all of the titles you subscribe to. You can browse the TOC by clicking on the triangle to the left of the title. Drill down until you find the section, chapter, image, figure, etc. that you are interested in or click on the document icon to the right of the section, chapter, etc. to go directly to the document. The Table of Contents is shown here in its collapsed state.

If the Table of Contents becomes unwieldy you can click on the “Collapse All” link to return it to its collapsed state.

Click on the Resources tab to view all of your available resources. Only the resources that you subscribe to will be appear on this page.

Click on the Resources you are interested in and it will launch in a separate browser window.

If you do not have a My STAT!Ref account you can create one by selecting the “No, I want to create My STAT!Ref account” option. If you already have a My STAT!Ref account you can select the “Yes, I have a password” option and enter in your password. CAVEAT: You may not have this option available to you.
