Higher University Education that is provided by the Universities, the Polytechnic Schools, the Higher Fine Arts institute and the Hellenic Open University. 2. Higher Technological Education: that is provided by the Higher Technological Educational Institutes (TEI). Their role is more applied and their research is more technological oriented. Tertiary education institutions are fully self-administrated legal entities of public law The institutions are under the supervision of the state (Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs) and are financed by it. Education is provided free of charge and the programs are offered in the Greek language. Some specialized study programs mainly at post-graduate level are offered in the English language.

SAMUz, March 9-12/2014, Giessen AUTh 4 Post-graduate and Doctoral studies in Greece Post-graduate studies in Greece lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization (Masters degree). The general goal of post-graduate studies is to allow students to specialize in certain scientific areas. The post-graduate courses are open to Greek or foreign graduates of Greek universities and TEI or accredited equivalent institutes from other countries. The admission requirements and selection criteria are determined by the internal regulation of each University’s postgraduate program.

The general goal of doctoral studies is high-level specialization in strategic areas of knowledge and the promotion of fundamental research in various scientific fields with a view to strengthening the country’s scientific base. In the case of Universities that offer postgraduate courses it is essential to have a Post- graduate Diploma (Master Level) in order to obtain a Doctorate. Permission to prepare a doctoral dissertation at Universities which do not offer regular post-graduate courses is granted to applicants who meet certain prerequisites. The Departments themselves lay down the admission requirements. The application is accompanied with the subject and a brief description of the research proposal, that includes areas such as (the title of the topic area, a general overview of area, Literature Review, Key Research Questions, Methodology, Timescale/research planning, Conclusions). The research proposal application is submitted to the department and a 3- member supervisory committee is assigned. The 3-member supervisory committee sets the Thesis subject and submit it to the General Assembly of Special Composition for approval. The subject may specified in more detail in a later stage. SAMUz, March 9-12/2014, Giessen AUTh 17 Post-Graduate Program (PGP) of the Faculty of Agriculture, AUTh Students Rights and Duties – 2 nd cycle of Postgraduate Studies (PhD) The duration for the Doctoral Dissertation may not be less than three (3) complete calendar years from the date of the definition of the three member Advisory Committee. The maximum time limit for a doctoral dissertation, shall not exceed six (6) full calendar years. For specific cases, may be given an extension or suspension for one (1) calendar year, by decision of the General Assembly of Special Composition, after special recommendation of the three member Advisory Committee. The overpass of the extension time entails the loss of his/her PhD candidate property and the removal of the PhD subject, after the decision of the General Assembly of Special Composition.

SAMUz, March 9-12/2014, Giessen AUTh 18 Post-Graduate Program (PGP) of the Faculty of Agriculture, AUTh Students Rights and Duties – 2 nd cycle of Postgraduate Studies (PhD) The PhD student shall draw up each year an annual progress report in collaboration with the three-member advisor committee, indicating: a) the research progress b) the need or not for the continuation of his work, and c) scheduling tasks for next year. Also a presentation of the research proposal (idea, methodology, data, early results) should presented by the candidate in the department (faculty and students) after the first year of study. Postgraduate students and doctoral candidates, for gaining teaching experience, can participate in laboratory exercises of undergraduate or postgraduate courses in collaboration with their supervisor.

SAMUz, March 9-12/2014, Giessen AUTh 19 Post-Graduate Program (PGP) of the Faculty of Agriculture, AUTh 2 nd cycle of Postgraduate Studies (PhD) When the PhD candidate finish the thesis and all other obligations, the 3- member advisory committee proposes for approval to the Coordinating Committee another 4 members (experts in the subject) to form the 7- member examination committee (2 of the 4 should be external).Coordinating Committee The PhD thesis candidate should present its research within half hour and then the 7-member committee examines the candidate. In order the thesis to be approved, 5 of the 7 members, at least, should agree.
