Healthcare Ministry Basics for Leaders Sponsors

Catholic Social Teaching Course Plan Application to My Role Jesus’ Ministry Moral Instincts ERDs Our Ministry Catholic Social Teaching (Use this slide to show participants where we are in the scheme of the course and to introduce the topic. Click once to bring up current “block”.) Sponsor -- OUTCOMES (25 minutes) Participants will be able to explain the central role of sponsorship in the Catholic healthcare ministry. Participants will be able to explain the structure of sponsorship for their healthcare system. We saw that in the past two centuries, the Catholic healthcare ministry was built upon the faith, sacrifices and hard work of the women and men in Catholic religious congregations. Much has changed in Catholic healthcare, especially in the last half of the 20th century. The Sisters and Brothers that were so intimately involved in the day to day activities of healthcare work are gone. Their relationship to their ministries is very different. In this section we will explore that relationship which is known today as “sponsorship.” Church Sponsor

Brainstorm 1. What do you know about sponsors? 2. What questions do you have about sponsors or sponsorship? Allow a few minutes for people to write. Surface responses from group. Write responses on flipchart or overhead Question 1: WHAT WE KNOW Question 2: OUR QUESTIONS Use their questions (from question 2) to guide your emphasis during the presentation. At the end, have them look at what they “knew” and what the “know” now. To begin, let’s look at a definition of sponsorship.

Sponsorship Sponsors hold ministries “in trust” in the name of the Church; they are accountable to the Church for the mission being carried out in a particular place “Sponsor” or “Sponsorship” is not a technical or legal term. It is used with various meanings. In general this definition works for most situation. What sponsor is not Franchise Ownership with benign neglect Control Latin root of sponsor: to pledge oneself solemnly A sponsor pledges solemnly to fulfill a task.

Sponsors: Linking Church & Institutional Ministry Mission & Ministry of Jesus Mission & Ministry of the Church Mission and Ministry of Sponsor Mission of Organization Ministry of Leaders/Employees The core concept of sponsorship is that the sponsoring entity has responsibility for the mission of the institution. Sponsorship insures that the mission of the institution (continuing the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ) is carried out to the fullest extent possible and with integrity and fidelity. (click 1) The sponsor serves as the connector between Church and organization as ministry. (click 2) The foundation is built upon the mission and ministry of Jesus. (click 3) The Church continues the mission and ministry of Jesus throughout time. (click 4) The organization continues the mission of the Church through the sponsors. (click 5) Thus the work of leaders and employees is a continuation of the healing ministry of Jesus in the world today.

Sponsors Care About Mission Treat all persons with respect Support healthy communities Collaborate with those who share vision Provide services to those most in need Develop leaders in Catholic Health Ministry Advocate for quality of life for all Sponsors play a role of influence in key areas where mission plays a big role. DVD on Sponsorship Sponsors of each CHE facility are members of a group called the Sponsors Council The Sponsors Council of CHE is committed to sharing the role of sponsorship with laity as we move into the future

Reflection / Dialogue What did you notice, how did you feel about the message of the DVD? What do you recognize in your work that is rooted in the Franciscan tradition? As we can see, sponsorship has evolved over time and even for Provena Health, will continue to evolve. With that in mind, I ask you to reflect on and then discuss at your tables the question on the screen. (Allow time for personal reflection and then some table dialogue. Then ask for highlights from the table discussions.)
