The founder of the New York Colony was Henry Hudson. The owner is The Duke of York and or James. The year it was founded was But colonist did not arrive until By Charley and Madison Where colony was.

The Iroquois were the first to settle in New York, and the largest group. The nations were the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Seneca, and Onondaga. The Iroquois got food from the land around them, by hunting and fishing. Women had all the power. They were able to choose Chiefs, and discus trade. The First People

The First Settlers In 1664, James or the Duke of York founded and owned New York. The Settlers were Dutch, French, German, English, and Swedish. Dutch did not own New York by themselves. In 1664 the English took over and renamed New York,New York, after the Duke of York.

The First Settlers (continue) In 1621, a group of merchants started the West India Company. IN 1624 a company sent a ship full of settlers. Manhattan became part of New Netherland in The colony’s governor bought land from the American Indians.

Life in the Colony From the Beginning, people from many countries lived in New York. Africans were shipped to the colony to be worked as slaves Most settlers lived a days journey of a town Everybody worked such as women, men, and children and all had different jobs.

life in colony (continue) Children worked with cows and collected eggs. They went to school to learn writing and reading of the bible. Women cooked meals, clean the house, and took care of gardens. Men hunted, protected their family, and worked in the fields.

Work and Trade In the Colony Most of the colonist in the New York Colony became rich by trading furs with the Native Americans. Albany is where most of the furs were traded. Most of the slaves did house work. But indentured servants helped work on the farm of wealthy families.

Work and Trade in the Colony (continue) The New York Colony was full of business. Shops filled the cities and town Colonist created wooden barrels to ship goods and made leather boots to walk around the hard ground cities.

New York's Exports Agricultural exports include cattle, horses, and wheat. Industrial exports include iron and ships. Natural Resource exports include fur and timber. Moo !

Community and Religion There where a lot of different religions in New York including Catholic and Jewish. New York had the freedom that you could attend church but you did not have to. New York colonist had churches, court, and jail.

Community and Religion (continue) Most of the early settlers were owned by the Dutch Reformed Church. New York didn’t need rules about religion.

Becoming a State In the 1600’s France was interested in claiming land in northern New York. By the early 1700’s the population of the New York Colony was 20,000 people. After 36 years the population had doubled.

Statehood for New York New York was the most powerful of all the colonies, but nobody wanted it to become a state. They wrote newspapers, pamphlets, and essays to show their views. On July 26, 1788 New York was the eleventh state to sign the constitution.

Review New York was one of the Middle colonies. New York was named after the Duke of York. The first settlement of New York was New Netherland. The original population was 250 Dutch Settlers.

Fast Facts 18 different languages were spoken. Longhouses could be as long as a football field.
