Elementary and Secondary Education: A Blueprint for Reform On March 13, 2010 the Obama administration released its blueprint for revising the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which would ask states to adopt college- and career-ready standards and reward schools for producing dramatic gains in student achievement 8/28/20109

Elementary and Secondary Education: A Blueprint for Reform Raises standards for all students and Sets a clear goal “Every student should graduate from high school ready for college and a career, regardless of their income, race, ethnic or language background, or disability status.” U.S. Department of Education, Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development, ESEA Blueprint for Reform, Washington, D.C., 2010 (p. 3). 8/28/201010

Unified Strategy for College and Career Readiness Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Mandate:  Reduce college remediation rates of recent high school graduates by at least 50% by 2014 from 2010 rates  Increase college completion rates of students enrolled in one or more remedial classes by 3% annually from 2009 to 2014

What is College Readiness? Knowledge and skill set a student needs in order to succeed in a credit-bearing course at a postsecondary institution; to complete entry level courses at a level of understanding and proficiency that prepares the student for subsequent courses

What is Career Readiness? Having the core academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities; employability skills that are essential in any career area such as critical thinking and responsibility; and technical, job-specific skills related to a specific career pathway
