Why? “The smallest acts of kindness made the unbearable bearable” Kenneth Schwartz Health care – emotionally demanding and challenging field Dealing with death, disease, illness and the impacts on the patient and their loved ones Mental Health – Stigmatised patient group, society – “weak”, “brought it on themselves” Inpatients – Majority detained often receiving care they do not want nor feel they need Intelligent Kindness – Cared for staff become better more attuned carers who promote trust, improved communication and cooperation which improves outcomes for patients
