AIDA is co-funded by the European Commission within the Framework Programme 7 Capacities Specific Programme, Grant Agreement L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th AIDA-2 proposal meeting

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Contents H2020 call for “Integrating and Opening of Research Infrastructures of European interest” description : - Total Budget / Dates - Physical sciences call for proposals - Key elements of a I3 project : AIDA FP7 contents as an example…. - New aspects, contents and budget for AIDA-2 Meeting goal Proposed organization - Coordination/timeline

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th IA call budget and date Link to the call (“ excellent sciences”) 020/calls/h2020-infraia htmlhttp://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2 020/calls/h2020-infraia html) Published on 11/12/13 Deadline for proposal submission : 02 September 17h00 Total budget : 140 M€ (90 M€ in 2014, 50 M€ in 2015) Work programme is divided into : -Starting communities : 19 calls for proposal. New projects. Recommended budget up to 5 M€ -Advanced community : 22 calls for proposals Recommended budget up to 10 M€ (see later) To fit within total budget, typical success rate will be about 50 %....

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Physical sciences calls Starting communities : 1) European laboratory astrophysics 2) Research infrastructures for high energy astrophysics 3) Science at deep underground laboratories 4) Integrating gravitational waves search In principle no competition between Starting and Advanced communities. Only possible interference might be with 2) if same Trans-National Access is offered for detector/calibration.

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Physical sciences calls Physical Sciences - Advanced Communities Detectors for future accelerators. This activity aims at furthering the integration of, and access to, the key research infrastructures in Europe for the testing and development of advanced detector technologies.  It corresponds to the first sentence of the AIDA response to the IA-H2020 consultation on December Natural continuation of AIDA Research infrastructures for nuclear physics. This activity aims at furthering the integration of, and access to, the key research infrastructures in Europe for studying the properties of exotic nuclei or of nuclear matter at extreme conditions.  Could be a continuation of ENSAR2 or HADRON PHYSICS3. Both seems to prepare a proposal. HP3-next next could answer on our topic or might have similar WPs/Tasks…  Our main competitors… European planetary science. This activity aims at furthering the integration of the key research infrastructures in Europe for studying planetary science by drawing in new partners and by providing access to the facilities and to a larger number of users, taking into account the multi- and trans-disciplinary nature of the field.

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Expected I3 Contents AIDA Networking Activities : WP2 : Common Software Tools. EC contribution mainly for manpower WP3 : Microelectronics and interconnection technology. Large fraction use for common run, interconnection process…. WP4 : Relation with industry. Mainly Academic-Industry workshops

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Expected I3 Contents AIDA Trans-National Activities : WP5 : DESY Test Beam (user support) WP6 : CERN Test Beam + PS East Hall irradiation (user support) WP7 : TransNational Access European irradiation facilities (irradiation hour units + shipping of components)

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Expected I3 Contents AIDA Joint Research Activities : WP8 : Improvement and equipment of irradiation and test beam lines. quite heterogeneous WP containing beam infra upgrade at CERN/LNF, PS proton irradiation upgrades, GIF++ infras but also database for qualification of components under irradiation, neutrino detectors, DAQ….. EC contribution for manpower and materials WP9 : Advanced Infrastructures for detector R&D Contained gas detectors facilities, precision pixel and silicon detectors infra, and granular calorimeter studies infrastructure. EC contribution for manpower and materials Should produce deliverables which improve the infrastructure and not “pure R&D”

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th New aspects in H2020 Work package on innovation mandatory in project. Contents to be defined, see G. Agnelli talk  Innovation here is something which can boost EU industry and/or lead to societal application. It should therefore go beyond the R&D for our HEP detectors From discussion with AIDA EC project officer, involvement of industry would be an added value but should they be real beneficiary (receiving EC contribution) or not, no clear answer.

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Contents for AIDA-2 ? AIDA-2 can not be only a continuation of AIDA : -Should contains TA, NA, JRA. Might need to increase a little more TA with respect to AIDA (with useful facilities for the community ! ) -If continuation need to justify why and what will be the added value. -Need a to find a way to support some of the tools/components built in AIDA -Needs new ideas/initiative transversal to projects/country, leading to deliverable improving facilities/infrastructure -Innovation WP -Lessons from AIDA : should divide in smaller WP, non single institute task, less deliverables at end of project

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Budget for AIDA-2 ? IN FP7, EC request was limited to 10 M€. Expert panel evaluated the scientific content and provided the ranking which makes the project accepted but EC members (PO) scrutinized budget request and defined the project budget (AIDA from 10 to 8 M€ ) to start negotiation In H2020, to speed up process, only one phase with expert panel which will include an evaluation of the requested budget in their ranking. Not clear what will be the impact. Above sentence, seems to indicated that more than 10 M€ could be requested.

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Budget for AIDA-2 ? Discussion with Project Officer suggest to stay with 10 M€ EC request but probably need a second iteration with EC. Would suggest : -a baseline project with 10 M€ EC request and a matching fund from partners about % (was 69 % in AIDA) -option with 12 M€ EC request and constant total budget (therefore lower matching fund from partners) -As in AIDA try to limit the numbers of beneficiaries (40 in AIDA) but ideally better (from PO discussion). Should use third party possibilities/consortium. No beneficiary with a EC request < ~50 k€ ? **** Would be interesting to know if your competitors are willing to ask more than 10 M€

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Expression of interests Receive >60 EoIs, some with more than one topic. About different institutes/universities Excel file with names of EoI, contact person and groups involved under this talk indico link. Not weighted by number of groups per EoI, so only indicative about community size More than 50 %, LHC oriented

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th A few comments about EoIs Among the EoIs received: -Some are too R&D generic, do not fit with IA goals -Some are too project/experiment oriented : we can not build experiment components -Some are “natural” AIDA continuation but need to demonstrate added value of AIDA-2 to continue -Very few include deliverables which would improve/upgrade our Infrastructures : need to find clever deliverables -Some are coming from a single country : will have to be merge with other partners Summarizing all these EoIs in a coherent way will be a real challenge for the next speakers ! Sharing of EoIs between talks was not easy, and if EoI is not covered, do not blame speaker but only me ! AIDA-2 proposal will need to fit well with the particle physics European Strategy approved by CERN council in 2013 (balance between communities should respect priorities)

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th Goal of the meeting 1)Give a summary of the expression of interests, identify the most promising items for AIDA-2 2) Discuss all ideas/initiatives/opportunities 3)At the end of that meeting, aim is to have a first agreed rough baseline WP breakdown in AIDA-2  Build the AIDA-2 community along this baseline WP breakdown over the next two months….. Discussion between groups/communities. Quite obvious that not all EoIs will fit in AIDA-2 and critical size of involved community will be a key point to select activities/tasks as well as proposed deliverable.

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th AIDA-2 proposal organization (I) AIDA-2 coordination Team : (WP definition, budget, balance between community/country…) AIDA management : T. Benkhe (DESY), P. Soler (Glasgow), S. Stavrev (CERN), I. Vila (Santander), L. Serin (LAL/IN2P3) Community representatives : ILC : J. Fuster (Valencia) Neutrinos : LHC : ?, C. Meroni (Milano) CERN representative : K. Elsener First meeting tomorrow morning.

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th AIDA-2 proposal organization (II) Soon after today’s meeting, design one or two contacts persons per potential WP : -To organize meetings between interesting groups and converge on coherent scientific proposal with deliverables/milestones and proposed budget/manpower breakdown (Indico AIDA-2 to be used) - Report to about progress/difficulties to AIDA-2 executive coordination team -Write corresponding section of proposals if WP accepted -Will need also to build National contact lists (will start from AIDA existing one) : Main role is to check with Funding agencies/ Institutes that matching funds will be there, and define national priority list of activities if selection has to be done. -AIDA-2 egroup list : contains by default all AIDA members but anyone can subscribe at :

L. Serin LAL/IN2P3/CNRS February 17th AIDA-2 proposal timeline December-January : EoIs Feb 17 th open meeting Feb 24 th : All WP contacts persons designed Up to mid April : discussion between groups/partners to propose coherent WP/Tasks.
