“Second Timothy” “Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 Workbook by Reg Ginn Pages “Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 Workbook by Reg Ginn Pages Lesson 7

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But you have carefully followed my doctrine, etc…” (v.10) –The young preacher had followed Paul’s teachings as opposed to the false teachings of those: Who resist the truth (v.8) With corrupt minds Disapproved concerning the faith –Timothy was encouraged to “continue” in the things he had learned from Paul (v.14) –He “carefully followed” which showed he was faithful to Christ and His word Page 33

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 Paul lists nine features which characterized this servant of the Lord (vs.10, 11) These are characteristics of Paul’s preaching career Timothy was well aware of these since he had worked with Paul for many years Paul was a role model for the young preacher Page 34

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3: “Doctrine” – Preaching the truth of Christ in its completeness; none can be saved without sound doctrine (Rom.6:17,18; 1Tim.4:16) 2. “Manner of life” – Conduct consistent with his preaching; no hypocrisy 3. “Purpose” – Goals, plans, designs; Paul’s goal was, “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil.3:14) –This must be the most important goal in every Christian’s life Page 34

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3: “Faith” – A belief that the religious doctrines provided to him by the Lord were truths; the state of the mind to the truth of what is declared by another 5. “Longsuffering” – Patience; enduring sufferings; persevering under difficult conditions 6. “Love” – His conduct toward others which showed concern and caring for them; love of the truth and love for both lost and saved men will determine the limits of a teacher’s teaching Page 35

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3: “Perseverance” – Persistence in any thing undertaken; “winners never quit, and quitters never win.” 8. “Persecutions” – The infliction of pain, punishment or death upon others unjustly on account of his religion; sufferings 9. “Afflictions” – A state of pain, distress, or grief; caused by persecutions Page 35

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 Persecutions and afflictions happened to Paul at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra (v.11) –Timothy had once lived in or near those cities and was very aware of these sufferings –On each occasion, the Lord delivered Paul Satan is constantly at work to discourage and destroy those who have chosen to leave sin and serve Christ “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (v.12) Page 36

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (v.13) There are two kinds of false teachers: 1.those who knowingly teach error, and 2.those who are sincerely mistaken in their convictions  they are self-deceived in that conviction Both are “evil” since they preach false doctrine Page 36

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (v.13) –“Evil men” are in opposition to good men –“Imposters” are seducers (KJV), those who entices another by flattery, promises or falsehoods –Left unattended, these types will naturally grow worse –They deceive [lead astray] and are easily deceived themselves It is a case of “the blind leading the blind” Page 36

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, –knowing from whom you have learned them, (v.14) –that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, –which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (v.15) Two incidental facts: 1.Paul knew the Old Testament was “Holy Scriptures” 2.Further, he commends Timothy’s mother and grandmother for teaching him at an early age Page 36

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them…” –Timothy was to “continue” to “follow” the things he had learned from Paul (v.10,14) –He knew “…from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures… (v.15) –He had been recommended by the brethren at Lystra and Iconium (Acts 16:2) –He had probably read the letter Paul wrote to the Ephesians –He was with Paul on parts of two journeys Page 36

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of…” –“…which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (v.15) –The “Holy Scriptures” were given with one goal in God’s mind – to provide salvation to a lost and dying world –Paul had “the mind of Christ” (1Cor.2:10-16) –All of his writings were “Holy Scriptures” as well as all other Biblical writers Page 36

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…” (v.16) –Paul said, “…it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit…” (Eph.3:5) –“Scripture” means sacred writings –God inspired the writings through “holy men of God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2Pet.1:24) Page 37

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “…and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…” (v.16) –“Doctrine” means teachings –“Reproof” means rebuke, for conviction –“Instruction in righteousness” means teaching the quality of being right or just Page 38

“Follow My Doctrine…” 2 Timothy 3:10-17 “…that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (v.17) –When the “man of God” conforms to the Holy Scriptures [New Testament], he is complete [having no deficiency; perfect] –No work is a good work unless it is a work of faith in the word of God –It is not up to man to decide what is and is not a good work in religious matters Page 36
