Let No Corrupt Word Proceed Out Of Your Mouth guarding our tongue Let No Corrupt Word Proceed Out Of Your Mouth

Ephesians 4:25-32 25 Therefore, putting away lying, “ Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

No Corrupt Word What kind of words are corrupt? Ephesians 5:1-4 1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. 3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

No Corrupt Word filthiness obscene, base, dishonorable speech arising from sinful lusts of flesh and not from the purity of the spirit dirty jokes vulgar language

No Corrupt Word foolish talking speech that is without wisdom and without a consideration of heavenly things not thinking before you speak inconsiderate / rude comments blasphemous words and jokes (including euphemisms) sometimes talking for attention or to get a laugh

No Corrupt Word coarse jesting wit and humor that is neither pure nor edifying making fun of others bitter or cutting sarcasm innuendo / double entendre

No Corrupt Word Ephesians 4:31-32 Also, no bitterness, anger, or slander. (Even if you think it’s deserved.) Ephesians 4:31-32 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

The Effects of Our Speech Though the tongue is small, it has surprising power. James 3:3-5 3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.

The Effects of Our Speech It has the power to destroy our own lives and the lives of others. James 3:5-6 See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

The Effects of Our Speech Impure Heart Impure Speech Luke 6:45 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

The Effects of Our Speech Impure Heart Impure Speech Impure Actions Matthew 15:18-19 18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

Guarding Our Speech James 3:7-8 How do we eliminate temptations of the tongue? We can’t. James 3:7-8 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Guarding Our Speech Impure Heart Impure Speech Graceful Speech Ephesians 4:29 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

Guarding Our Speech Impure Heart Impure Speech Graceful Speech Pure Environment Philippians 4:8 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, …noble, …just, …pure, …lovely, …of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things. Galatians 6:7-8 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 1 Corinthians 15:33 33 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”

Conclusion Titus 2:6-8 God’s standard for our speech is blamelessness. Meeting this standard will save ourselves, and perhaps even some around us. Titus 2:6-8 6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.
